In the modern era, the city has expanded significantly. Many people now live in outlying areas like Sherwood and West Royalty. The city grew when the village of Spring Park was amalgamated in 1959. Later, in 1995, several other communities joined the city.

Today, the city has a population of about 40,500 people. The larger census area includes 83,063 people. This represents roughly half of the entire province's population. This growth changed the landscape from farms to residential neighborhoods.

Charlottetown is also a center for education and the arts. The Confederation Centre of the Arts opened in 1964.
