In 1966, Whitman did something very violent. He went to the University of Texas at Austin. He went to the top of a tall clock tower. He shot at people for 96 minutes. This event killed seventeen people. 
Before this, Whitman felt very sick. He had bad headaches and strange thoughts. He wrote about these feelings in a diary.

In the months before the shooting, Whitman experienced severe physical and mental distress. He wrote about these struggles in his "Daily Record of C. J. Whitman." 
After Whitman died, doctors performed an autopsy to find a cause for his behavior. On August 2, 1966, a neuropathologist discovered a small tumor deep in his brain.
