He is most widely recognized for his historic solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927. This achievement helped transform the aviation industry into a global system for transportation. Beyond flying, Lindbergh was an inventor, a decorated soldier, and a dedicated environmentalist. His life spanned many different fields, from mechanical engineering to international conservation.

Lindbergh's journey into aviation began with a fascination for motorized mechanics. He initially studied mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. However, he left college in 1922 to pursue flight training. He first flew as a passenger in a Lincoln Standard "Tourabout" biplane. To earn money for more lessons, he worked as a wing walker and a parachutist. He also gained experience as an airplane mechanic in Montana.

His early flying career was marked by intense practice and several challenges. In 1923, he purchased a Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" biplane for $500. He used this aircraft to perform stunts under the name "Daredevil Lindbergh." He also gained experience by flying doctors to emergency calls during floods. In 1924, he entered the U.S. Army Air Service for formal training. Lindbergh graduated first in his class in March 1925.

Following his military training, Lindbergh worked as a U.S. Air Mail pilot. He served as the chief pilot for Contract Air Mail Route #2. This route provided service between St. Louis and Chicago via Springfield and Peoria. This role helped him prepare for his most famous mission. In May 1927, he attempted to win the $25,000 Orteig Prize. This prize was offered for the first nonstop flight between New York and Paris.

He flew alone for over 33 hours to reach Paris. While he was not the first to fly across the Atlantic, he was the first to do so solo. His flight set a new world record for distance at that time. This achievement sparked the "Lindbergh Boom," which increased global interest in commercial aviation.

Lindbergh's contributions extended into the field of medical technology. In 1931, he collaborated with French surgeon Alexis Carrel to invent a perfusion pump. A perfusion pump is a device designed to move fluids, such as blood, through a system. This invention was intended to make future heart surgeries and organ transplantations possible. Although their specific version was eventually considered impractical, the work was significant.

His later years were marked by complex political views and a shift toward nature. During the 1930s, his stances on neutrality and race led to accusations of being a Nazi sympathizer. He resigned from the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 after a public rebuke from President Franklin Roosevelt. However, during World War II, he flew 50 combat missions in the Pacific as a civilian consultant.

In his final decades, Lindbergh became a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and an environmentalist. He worked to establish national parks in the United States. He also sought to protect endangered species and tribal people in East Africa and the Philippines. He lived his retirement in Maui, Hawaii. Lindbergh died of lymphoma in 1974 at the age of 72.
