These lizards have many cool parts. They have a prehensile tail. This means the tail can grip things like a hand. They use it as a fifth limb to stay steady in trees.

They belong to a family called Chamaeleonidae. There are about 200 different species of these lizards. Most of them live in Africa. About half of all species live on the island of Madagascar. You can also find some in southern Asia and Europe. Some have even been moved to Hawaii and Florida. They are famous for being able to change their colors.

Their skin has a top layer with pigments. Under that layer, they have special cells called iridophores. These cells hold tiny guanine nanocrystals. The chameleon can change the spacing between these crystals. When the crystals are close together, the skin looks blue or green. When the lizard moves them further apart, the skin reflects longer wavelengths. This makes the skin look yellow, orange, or red. They also use color to control their body heat. Dark colors soak up heat from the sun. Light colors reflect heat away to keep them cool.

The name chameleon comes from the Greek words for "on the ground" and "lion." We have found fossils of very old lizards that look like chameleons. One fossil called Anqingosaurus brevicephalus is from China. It lived about 58 to 61 million years ago. Another fossil called Chamaeleo caroliquarti was found in Europe. These fossils show that chameleons have been around for a very long time. They likely shared an ancestor with other lizards over 100 million years ago.

Most have a prehensile tail. This means the tail can wrap around branches like a hand. They often use it as a "fifth limb" to stay steady. Their feet are zygodactylous, which helps them grip twigs. Classification of the family has changed as science has progressed. In 1986, the family was divided into two subfamilies: Brookesiinae and Chamaeleoninae. This division was based on different groups of genera. However, many scientists later debated whether this was the correct way to group them. Some researchers eventually abandoned the subfamily division entirely. In 2015, researcher Glaw proposed a new division. He placed the genera Brookesia and Palleon in Brookesiinae and others in Chamaeleoninae.
