In this view, both the cause and the effect are happenings. Other thinkers have a different view. They might say a cause can be an action, but the effect is a solid object. An old example uses the parents of Socrates. Their actions were the cause, but Socrates himself was the effect.

History shows us that many great minds have thought about this. A famous thinker named Aristotle lived a long time ago. He said that a "cause" is really just an answer to a "why" question. He had four different ways to answer these questions. Another thinker named David Hume had different ideas. He believed that humans cannot see causes directly with their eyes. Instead, he said we learn about causes through our own experiences and habits. This helps us understand how the world works through what we see happen over and over.

There are also different types of causes to learn about. A necessary cause is something that must happen for an effect to occur. However, that cause might not be enough to do the job all by itself. A sufficient cause is different because it makes an effect happen every single time. There is also something called a contributory cause. This is a factor that helps an effect happen along with other causes. For example, a short circuit might help a house fire start. But the fire also needs other things, like flammable materials, to happen too.

Today, people still use these ideas to study big questions. Some people wonder about the link between causality and free will. A view called determinism says every event follows a set path of cause and effect. This leads to a debate about whether humans can truly make their own choices. Others believe that cause and effect are linked to how we see space and time. Even in science, the idea of causality helps us understand how light and energy move. It is a basic idea that helps us make sense of everything around us.

Philosophers study the nature of these relationships through metaphysics. Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that looks at the fundamental nature of reality. One major question is what kind of entities can act as causes or effects. Some believe that causes and effects are the same type of thing. This view is often found in process philosophy. A more classical view suggests that causes and effects can be different kinds of entities. Aristotle provided a famous way to look at this. He used the term "cause" to mean an explanation or an answer to a "why" question. He identified four types of causes: material, formal, efficient, and final. The "efficient" cause is an action that brings something about. In this framework, an action can be a cause while an enduring object is the effect. For instance, the actions of parents can be the efficient cause of a child. The child is then seen as a "substance," which is an enduring object.

Understanding causality is also a matter of epistemology. Epistemology is the study of how we gain knowledge. David Hume was a famous thinker who studied this relationship. He argued that pure reason cannot prove that efficient causality exists. Instead, he believed humans learn about causes through custom and mental habit. Hume noted that all human knowledge comes from experience. He distinguished between the regularity view and the counterfactual notion. The counterfactual view states that X causes Y only if Y would not exist without X. This helps us distinguish between true causal relations and simple coincidences.

Modern philosophy divides the study of causality into five major approaches. These are the regularity, probabilistic, counterfactual, mechanistic, and manipulationist views. These approaches are often considered "reductive." This means they define causality using other types of relations. For example, the regularity view defines it through constant conjunctions of events. The probabilistic view looks at changes in conditional probabilities. The mechanistic view focuses on the underlying mechanisms of a relation. The manipulationist view looks at how things change under intervention. Each approach offers a different way to define how the world works.

We can also categorize causes by how much power they have. A necessary cause is something that must happen for an effect to occur. However, the presence of a necessary cause does not guarantee the effect will happen. A sufficient cause is different because its presence guarantees the effect. If X is a sufficient cause, then Y will definitely follow. A contributory cause is a factor that helps an effect happen alongside other causes. It is not sufficient on its own, and it is not always necessary. J.L. Mackie described "INUS" conditions to explain complex causes. An INUS condition is an insufficient but non-redundant part of a larger sufficient condition. For example, a short circuit might be one part of a condition that causes a house fire.

Causality also connects to deep questions about the universe and human choice. The deterministic worldview suggests the history of the universe is a progression of cause and effect. This leads to a debate regarding free will. Incompatibilism is the idea that determinism and free will cannot both be true. If the universe is deterministic, then free will might not exist. Compatibilism is the opposing view. It suggests that determinism and free will can exist together. Furthermore, causality is linked to the geometry of space and time. Causal efficacy cannot move faster than the speed of light. This makes causality a vital tool for interpreting scientific experiments and understanding the structure of the cosmos.
