Creating such a large palace took many steps and many talented people. First, a small wooden house sat on a hill. In 1723, a stone palace with sixteen rooms replaced it. Later, the architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli began a huge project in 1751. He combined several buildings into one grand structure. He used a style called Baroque, which is very fancy and grand. He even used almost 100 kg of gold for the sculptures.
The history of this estate began with Peter the Great. In 1710, he gave the land to his wife, Catherine I. The village was eventually named Tsarskoye Selo, which means "Tsar's Village." Over many years, different rulers added to the palace. Empress Elizabeth saw the palace grow much larger in the 1740s. Later, Catherine the Great used it as her summer home. Each ruler brought new ideas and new artists to the site.
There are many amazing rooms to discover inside the palace. The Grand Hall is a massive space for balls and dinners. It has a huge painted ceiling and many bright lamps.

The palace has also faced very difficult and sad times. A large fire broke out in the year 1820. Later, during World War II, the palace was badly damaged. It was left as a hollow shell after the fighting ended.

The construction of the palace evolved through several complex stages. Originally, the estate featured a small wooden house on a hill. In 1723, Johann Ferster built a two-storey stone palace for Catherine I. This building contained sixteen rooms and used polished alabaster for its state chambers. Later, in 1744, the palace expanded to a length of 300 meters. This expansion included a Middle House, two side wings, a chapel, and a Conservatory Hall. These sections were all linked by four galleries featuring hanging gardens.
Architectural styles at the palace changed as different rulers took power. During the mid-1700s, Bartolomeo Rastrelli led a major reconstruction. He used the Baroque style to create a sense of drama and movement. His design featured snow-white columns and sky-blue walls. He also used gilded stucco and sculptures that required nearly 100 kg of gold.
The history of the estate is tied to the expansion of the Russian Empire. Following the Great Northern War, Russia recovered the land known as Saari Mojs. In 1710, Peter the Great gifted the estate to his wife, Catherine I. The area was eventually named Tsarskoye Selo, meaning "Tsar's Village." Over the centuries, many famous artists contributed to the site. These included the sculptor Johann Franz Dunker and the painter Giuseppe Valeriani. Each era of leadership left a distinct mark on the palace's layout.
The palace contains many specialized rooms with unique decorative features. The Great Hall, or Light Gallery, is a massive space for formal balls. It covers approximately 1,000 square meters and features a spectacular painted ceiling.
The palace has survived significant destruction and periods of loss. A large fire in 1820 caused serious damage to the chapel and apartments.
Despite this destruction, the palace was successfully reconstructed. Soviet archivists had documented the interiors before the war began. This documentation was essential for the restoration process. Under the direction of Alexander Kedrinsky, reconstruction work started in 1957. Workers used the old records to rebuild the magnificent rooms and gardens.
