However, things became very difficult for Catherine later in life. Henry became unhappy because they did not have a surviving son. He wanted to marry a woman named Anne Boleyn. Henry asked the Pope to end his marriage to Catherine. When the Pope said no, Henry decided to break away from the Catholic Church. He declared himself the head of the Church in England. This meant his marriage to Catherine was declared invalid in 1533.

Even though she lost her position, many people still loved her. Catherine believed she was still the rightful queen. She spent her last years living at Kimbolton Castle. She died in January 1536, possibly from cancer.

Catherine was the youngest surviving child in a royal family of five children. She was highly educated by a tutor named Alessandro Geraldini. She studied many complex subjects like canon law, civil law, and theology. She also mastered several languages, including Latin, French, and Greek. This deep learning prepared her for a life of leadership and diplomacy.

Catherine's journey to the English throne began with a political arrangement. When she was three years old, she was betrothed to Arthur, Prince of Wales. Arthur was the eldest son of King Henry VII of England. They married in 1501 when they were both fifteen years old.

However, Arthur died only five months after their wedding. This left Catherine in a difficult position in England. She lived for many years as a widow while waiting for a new marriage arrangement. In 1507, she served as the Spanish ambassador to England. This made her the first known female ambassador in European history.

In 1509, Catherine married Henry VIII, the new King of England. They were married in a private ceremony at Greenwich Palace.

Their coronation took place on Midsummer's Day at Westminster Abbey. Catherine was very well received by the English public. She was a patron of Renaissance humanism and a friend to scholars. She supported thinkers like Erasmus of Rotterdam and Thomas More. She even commissioned a book titled "The Education of a Christian Woman" by Juan Luis Vives. This showed her commitment to learning and religious devotion.

Catherine proved her ability to lead during times of crisis. In 1513, King Henry went to France on a military campaign. He appointed Catherine as the Regent of England. This role meant she was the Governor of the Realm. During this time, Scotland invaded England. Catherine was heavily pregnant, yet she rode north in full armor. She addressed the troops with a speech about courage and patriotism. Her leadership helped the English defeat the invasion at the Battle of Flodden.

As the years passed, the relationship between Catherine and Henry changed. Henry became dissatisfied because the marriage had not produced a surviving son. At that time, there was no established precedent for a woman to rule as heir. Henry became infatuated with Anne Boleyn and sought an annulment. He asked Pope Clement VII to end the marriage. When the Pope refused, Henry decided to break from the Catholic Church. He assumed supremacy over religious matters in England to achieve his goals. In 1533, the marriage was declared invalid by English clergy.

Catherine did not accept this decision or Henry's new religious authority. She believed she was still the King's rightful wife and queen. This caused a major religious schism in England. Although she lost her status, she remained popular with the English people. She was known for her charity and her work helping the poor. She also successfully appealed for the lives of rebels involved in the Evil May Day. Even her political adversary, Thomas Cromwell, spoke highly of her strength. He noted that she could have defied history if not for her sex.

Catherine spent her final years at Kimbolton Castle. She died in January 1536, likely from cancer.
