Many people have different stories about these stars. In Greek myths, it is a vain queen. She sits on a throne in the sky. Other people see different things. Some see a reindeer or an elk.
Cassiopeia is full of amazing stars. The brightest is Schedar. It is a very large star. It is much brighter than our Sun. Another star is called Caph. It spins so fast that it bulges in the middle.

Many different cultures have looked at these stars and seen different things. In Greek mythology, the stars represent a vain queen named Cassiopeia. She was the wife of King Cepheus and the mother of Andromeda. As a punishment, she was placed in the sky on a throne. She must wheel around the north celestial pole. She spends half her time clinging to the throne so she does not fall off. Other people saw different shapes in the same stars. The Sámi people saw an elk antler. The Chukchi of Siberia saw five reindeer stags. In China, the stars were part of figures like a great chariot.
Astronomers have studied this area for a very long time. A Greek astronomer named Ptolemy listed Cassiopeia in the 2nd century. He included it as one of 48 known constellations. Later, in 1572, a famous scientist named Tycho Brahe saw a supernova there. A supernova is a massive explosion of a star that flares up very brightly. Today, we still find amazing things in this region. We have found fourteen star systems in Cassiopeia that have exoplanets. One of these, named HD 219134, is thought to have six planets orbiting it.
There are many incredible stars inside this constellation. The brightest is Alpha Cassiopeiae, which is also called Schedar. It is an orange-hued giant that is 771 times brighter than our Sun. Another star, Beta Cassiopeiae or Caph, spins very fast. It spins so quickly that it bulges in the middle. Gamma Cassiopeiae is also special because it is a variable star. This means its brightness changes over time. The star Epsilon Cassiopeiae is a hot blue-white star. It is 6.5 times as massive as our Sun.
Some of the most exciting things in Cassiopeia are moving or exploding. The star Kappa Cassiopeiae is a blue supergiant. It is a runaway star that moves at 2.5 million miles per hour.

This means it has an equatorial bulge that is 24% larger than its polar radius. Gamma Cassiopeiae is another notable star. It is a spectroscopic binary, which means it is a system of two stars. It is also a prototype for a specific type of variable star that flings off a disc of material due to high rotation.
Many stars in this region are classified as variable stars. This means their brightness changes over time. For example, Delta Cassiopeiae is a possible eclipsing binary. In such a system, one star passes in front of another, causing the light to dim. Gamma Cassiopeiae also shows unpredictable fades and brightenings. Even the star Epsilon Cassiopeiae, or Segin, is special. It is a Be star, which is a rapidly spinning star that creates a ring or shell of matter. These different types of stars show how much variety exists within a single constellation.
History and mythology have shaped how we see Cassiopeia. The constellation is named after a vain queen from Greek mythology. She was the wife of King Cepheus and the mother of Andromeda. Today, we can still study the remains of such events. Cassiopeia A is a supernova remnant located here. It is the brightest extrasolar radio source in the sky at frequencies above 1 GHz. 
Some stars in Cassiopeia are moving through space at incredible speeds. Kappa Cassiopeiae is a blue supergiant and a runaway star. It travels at about 2.5 million miles per hour relative to its neighbors. This speed is roughly 1,100 kilometers per second. As it moves, its magnetic field and particle wind collide with interstellar gas and dust. This collision creates a massive bow shock. This shock wave is about 12 light-years long and 1.8 light-years wide. 
Finally, Cassiopeia is part of a much larger galactic structure. A rich section of the Milky Way galaxy runs through this constellation. This area contains many open clusters, nebulae, and young stars. It even contains IC 10, which is an irregular galaxy. IC 10 is significant because it is the closest known starburst galaxy in our Local Group.
