Many people live near these mountains. Over 10 million people live in cities like Seattle and Portland. Because so many people live there, these volcanoes can be dangerous. They can cause big earthquakes or large landslides. Some landslides carry rock and ice far into valleys. 
These volcanoes have different shapes. Some are tall peaks called stratovolcanoes. Others are wide, flat shapes called shield volcanoes. Mount Rainier and Mount Shasta are two of the highest peaks. The volcanoes have erupted many times in history. Mount St. Helens had a major eruption in 1980. Lassen Peak erupted between 1914 and 1921.

These volcanoes form through a way the Earth works called subduction. This happens at the Cascadia subduction zone. In this area, parts of the Earth's crust slide under one another. This movement creates the volcanoes we see today. 

Volcanic activity in this area has a very long history. It began about 37 million years ago. The first major chapter is called the West Cascades period. This lasted from 37 million to 17 million years ago. During this time, the volcanoes were very active. 
Many specific volcanoes have interesting records of activity. Mount St. Helens had a major eruption in 1980. Lassen Peak erupted from 1914 to 1921. In Canada, the Mount Meager massif had a big eruption in 410 BCE. 
These mountains can change the land around them. Large landslides can move rock and ice into valleys. 
The Cascade Volcanoes, also known as the Cascade Volcanic Arc, are a series of volcanoes in western North America. 
These volcanoes form through a process called subduction. This occurs at the Cascadia subduction zone, where parts of the Earth's crust slide under one another. This movement creates the volcanic activity that builds the arc. The volcanoes come in many different shapes and sizes. Most are stratovolcanoes, which are tall, conical peaks. Others are shield volcanoes, which are broad and flat, like Medicine Lake Volcano and Newberry Volcano. The arc also contains cinder cones, lava domes, and even rare forms called tuyas. 
The history of the Cascade Arc is divided into three major chapters. The first is the West Cascades period, which lasted from 37 million to 17 million years ago. During this era, the volcanoes were exceptionally active. The arc was located slightly further west than it is today. One example is the Mount Aix Volcanic Complex, which erupted massive amounts of tephra and pyroclastic debris. In the North Cascades, geologists find remnants of this era in plutons. These are crystallized magma chambers that once fed the early volcanoes. 
A second chapter followed, known as a widespread dormancy period. This lasted from 17 million to 9 million years ago. For 8 million years, volcanic activity in the chain dipped significantly. Scientists believe this happened because the Columbia River flood basalts began erupting in the east. During this quiet time, weathering and erosion stripped the volcanoes down to their cores. They were not active enough to rebuild themselves until the flood basalts waned. This period ended around 9 million years ago.
The third chapter is the High Cascades period, which began 9 million years ago. As the flood basalts slowed, the Cascade volcanoes became active once more. The volcanic arc also drifted east to its current position. Between 6.25 and 5.45 million years ago, a massive flare-up occurred in central Oregon. This is known as the Deschutes Formation. During this 800,000-year span, about 1,000 cubic kilometers of pyroclastic material was expelled. This period helped build the ancestors of the modern volcanoes we see today. 
Modern volcanoes in the arc have unique traits. Mount Rainier and Mount Shasta are the two highest peaks, both exceeding 14,000 feet. Mount Rainier is particularly significant because it is a "Decade Volcano." This means the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior has identified it as worthy of special study. It poses a major risk to Seattle and Tacoma. 

Volcanic activity can cause devastating landslides and mudflows. At Mount Rainier, these mudflows are called lahars. About 5,000 years ago, a massive debris avalanche called the Osceola Mudflow occurred. It traveled all the way to the sites of present-day Tacoma and south Seattle. This event was so large it removed the top of Mount Rainier, reducing its height.
