People have made maps for thousands of years. Some of the oldest maps are carvings in rock. Others show stars in the sky to help people find their way.

In the past, maps were very different. In the Middle Ages, many maps were drawn in books.

One famous map is the Tabula Rogeriana. It was made in 1154. It was very accurate for its time. Later, during the Age of Discovery, new tools helped mapmakers. They used the compass and the telescope. This made maps much better. One famous mapmaker was Gerardus Mercator. He made a way to draw maps that helped sailors. He was also the first to use the word "atlas" for a book of maps. Today, we use new tools like GPS to make maps.

To make a good map, a person must follow several steps. First, they must choose what to include on the map. This is called map editing. They might pick physical things like roads or land. They might also pick abstract things like country borders.

Next, they must decide how to show the land on a flat surface. This step is called a map projection. They also use generalization to leave out things that are not needed. This helps make the map less crowded and easier to read.

People have been making maps for a very long time. Some of the earliest marks are rock carvings from the 4th millennium BCE.

These carvings in Italy and France show patterns like dotted lines. In ancient Babylonia, people made world maps as far back as the 9th century BCE.

These maps showed cities like Babylon near big rivers. The ancient Greeks and Romans also made many maps. In the 2nd century CE, a man named Ptolemy wrote a famous book about maps.

His work helped people understand the world they knew back then. In China, scientists were also making maps and star charts long ago.

One very famous map is the Tabula Rogeriana. An Arab geographer named Muhammad al-Idrisi made it in 1154.

He used stories from travelers to learn about Africa and the Far East. His map was the most accurate in the world for 300 years. He even estimated how big the Earth is. His work showed seven different climate zones across the world. It was a huge step forward for how people saw the Earth.

In the Age of Discovery, maps became even more important.

Explorers used new tools like the magnetic compass and the telescope. These tools helped them find their way more accurately. In 1507, Martin Waldseemüller made a map that used the name "America" for the first time.

Later, Gerardus Mercator created a famous way to draw maps in 1569.

His method helped sailors travel in straight lines. Mercator was also the first person to use the word "atlas" for a book of maps. In 1570, Abraham Ortelius made the first true modern atlas.

Making maps changed as printing technology improved.

In the Renaissance, people used woodcuts to print maps. This involved carving images into hard wood. Later, they used a method called intaglio. This meant engraving fine lines into metal plates like copper.

Ancient Babylonian maps from the 9th century BCE are the oldest surviving world maps. One shows Babylon near the Euphrates River, surrounded by a "bitter river" called Oceanus. In China, geographical literature dates to the 5th century BCE. The oldest existing Chinese maps come from the State of Qin in the 4th century BCE.

Classical antiquity brought significant mathematical advances to the field. The Greeks and Romans created maps starting in the 6th century BCE. In the 2nd century CE, Ptolemy wrote his famous treatise, Geographia.

His work provided a map of the Ecumene, the known Western world. Arab scholars began translating these Greek works into Arabic by the 8th century. Roman roads also motivated the creation of itinerarium, which were maps of road networks. In India, early cartography included charts of constellations for navigation. In China, Su Song published a star map in 1092 using an equidistant cylindrical projection.

During the Middle Ages, cartography focused heavily on religious and regional views. Many maps were created as illustrations within manuscripts.

A major milestone occurred in 1154 with the Tabula Rogeriana. The Arab geographer Muhammad al-Idrisi created this massive medieval atlas.

He combined classical knowledge with accounts from Arab merchants. His map divided the world into seven distinct climatic zones. It remained the most accurate world map for three centuries. Al-Idrisi even estimated the Earth's circumference with 10% accuracy.

The Age of Discovery transformed cartography through new technology. Explorers used the magnetic compass, telescope, and sextant to increase accuracy. In 1492, Martin Behaim created the oldest surviving Earth globe. In 1507, Martin Waldseemüller produced a map that first used the name "America."

Later, Gerardus Mercator published a revolutionary projection in 1569.

This projection uses parallel lines of longitude and latitude. It allows sailors to plot courses of constant bearing as straight lines. However, it also makes regions near the poles look much larger than they are. Mercator is also credited with being the first to use the term "atlas."

As the Renaissance progressed, the production of maps became more commercial. Abraham Ortelius created the first true modern atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, in 1570.

He even credited 183 different mapmakers in his work. Mapmaking was also a way for leaders to claim territory and show power. Printing technology allowed maps to reach more people. In the late 1500s, about 10% of Venetian homes owned a map.

This era saw the rise of major map-making centers in Rome, Florence, and Venice.

Two primary printmaking technologies defined the Renaissance era. The first was woodcut, where images were carved in relief from hardwood. This method was durable and could be used with existing printing presses. The second was copper-plate intaglio, where lines were engraved into metal.

In intaglio, ink is held in etched channels and pressed firmly onto paper. This creates a distinct "plate mark" around the map's border. Today, cartography has evolved into highly technical digital fields. Modern cartography forms the foundation for Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
