He is often called the father of modern taxidermy. This is because he changed how museums show animals to the world. He wanted people to see animals in their natural homes. He worked for famous places like the Field Museum and the American Museum of Natural History.

He also took nearly 1,000 photos using glass plates. In 1921, he went to the Virunga Mountains to study gorillas. He was the first person to film gorillas in the wild. He learned that gorillas were not aggressive animals. They are vegetarians that live peacefully with other creatures.

Akeley's work helped people care more about nature. He worked to create a place to protect gorillas. This helped lead to the creation of Africa's first national park.

To achieve lifelike results, Akeley developed a specific process known as the Akeley Method. This method focused on creating anatomically accurate mannequins. First, he sculpted a precise 1/12th scale clay model of the intended mount. Next, he built a sturdy armature using skeletal bones, wood, metal rods, and wire mesh. He then covered this frame with plaster and clay. He sculpted the clay to represent the exact musculature of a living animal. After the clay dried, he created a plaster mold by removing it in sections. He applied papier mache pulp and wire mesh inside this mold. This produced a full-scale, hollow, and lightweight mannequin. Finally, he meticulously attached the original animal pelt and sewn the seams so they were invisible.

Akeley's innovations extended far beyond taxidermy into various engineering fields. He was a prolific inventor with more than 30 patents to his name. One major invention was the Akeley Camera, a round, highly mobile motion picture camera.

This device allowed for the capture of wildlife in motion. The War Department eventually adopted this camera for aerial use during World War I. He also perfected a method for spraying concrete, which he called "gunite." This is known today as shotcrete. He used this invention to repair the crumbling facade of the Field Columbian Museum in Chicago.

Much of Akeley's most famous work resulted from his extensive African expeditions. In 1896, he traveled to Somaliland on an eight-month expedition. During this trip, he encountered a large leopard and survived a physical struggle with the animal. In 1905, a trip funded by Marshall Field lasted twelve months. During this journey, he collected 17 tons of material. This included 400 mammal skins, 1,200 small mammal skins, and 800 bird skins. He also captured nearly 1,000 glass plate photographs. These collections provided the raw materials for his groundbreaking museum dioramas.

Akeley's relationship with wildlife changed during his 1921 expedition to the Virunga Mountains. He led this trip to study gorillas, which were then considered very exotic. During this time, he became the first person to capture motion pictures of gorillas in their natural environment.

Through this observation, Akeley realized that gorillas were not the aggressive creatures people believed them to be. He discovered they are vegetarians that live peacefully with other animals. This realization shifted his focus toward conservation. He spent the rest of his life advocating for the protection of these animals.

His conservation efforts had a lasting global impact. Akeley worked to establish a gorilla preserve in the Virungas. His advocacy inspired King Albert I of Belgium to create the Albert National Park in 1925. This became Africa's first national park, now known as Virunga National Park.

He transitioned from a collector of specimens to a protector of habitats. He believed that scientific collection should serve the purpose of education and preservation rather than mere sport. This philosophy helped shape modern wildlife conservation movements.
