To make his art, Caravaggio worked in a very direct way. Most painters made many drawings before they started a painting. Caravaggio often skipped the drawings and worked right onto the canvas. He used live models to capture exactly how people looked. He did not try to make people look perfect or ideal. Instead, he painted their real flaws and natural details. This made his subjects feel like real living things.
His life began in Milan around the year 1571.

Caravaggio used a specific technique called chiaroscuro. This involves the use of strong contrasts between light and dark. He took this further with a style called tenebrism. Tenebrism is a dramatic method of lighting. It uses bright shafts of light against deep, dark shadows. This creates a theatrical effect on the canvas. It often makes the subject appear to emerge from darkness. He achieved this by working directly onto the canvas. Most artists of his time made many preparatory drawings. Caravaggio preferred to work quickly with live models. This allowed him to capture immediate, lifelike details.
His early works focused on small, realistic subjects.
