Long ago, sailors discovered this place by following the sea. Two Dutchmen named Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire first rounded it in 1616.

They named the cape after the city of Hoorn in the Netherlands. For many years, it was a vital part of the clipper route. Sailing ships used this path to carry trade goods around the world. It was a major milestone for every captain on that path.

There are many facts that make this place unique. The cape is located at 56 degrees south latitude.

This is much further south than the tip of Africa. The Chilean Navy keeps a station on Horn Island to help. This station has a residence, a chapel, and a lighthouse. There is also a memorial with a large sculpture of an albatross. This sculpture was made by the artist José Balcells to remember sailors.

Today, most big cargo ships do not use this route anymore. This is because the Panama Canal opened in August 1914. However, Cape Horn is still a huge goal for many sailors. Many famous ocean races, like the Vendée Globe, sail around the world via the Horn. Some people even try to "double the Horn" as a special challenge. The region also experiences high levels of rainfall. For example, the nearby Diego Ramírez Islands see an average of 3,100 mm of rain annually.

Cloud coverage is also very high throughout the year. This creates a landscape that is often grey and misty.

Wind and waves are the most dangerous parts of this region. The winds in the Southern Ocean are incredibly strong. At latitudes below 40° south, winds can blow west to east almost without interruption. These are known as the "roaring forties," "furious fifties," and "screaming sixties." Cape Horn sits at 56° south latitude, placing it deep within these fierce wind zones. The Andes mountains and the Antarctic Peninsula create a funneling effect. This channels the winds into the narrow Drake Passage, making them even more intense.

These winds create massive waves that roll across the ocean. In the shallower waters south of the Horn, these waves become shorter and steeper. This makes them even more hazardous for ships. Some rogue waves in the area can reach heights of 30 meters.

The fastest record for a commercial sailing ship on this route was 5 days and 14 hours in 1938.

The Chilean government maintains a presence at the cape to manage the area. The Chilean Navy operates a station on Horn Island. This station includes a residence, a utility building, a chapel, and a lighthouse.

The area is also part of the Cabo de Hornos National Park. In 1992, a memorial was built to honor sailors who died there. It features a large sculpture of an albatross by José Balcells. Sadly, the severe winds blew the sculpture over in 2014. Even nature shows its strength here, such as the world's southernmost tree. A Magellan's beech was found growing on a slope, though it is mostly bent to the ground.

Cape Horn connects several important global systems. It is a key part of the Drake Passage, which links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It is also a vital part of the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve. The region serves as the southern limit for the range of the Magellanic penguin. Because it is so far south, the daylight hours vary greatly. During the June solstice, the cape sees only about 6 hours and 57 minutes of light. In contrast, the December solstice brings much longer days. This extreme cycle of light and weather makes Cape Horn a unique part of our planet.
