This area is a great place for fishing. The Agulhas Bank is a wide, shallow part of the sea. It reaches 250 kilometres south from the cape.

Traveling by sea near the cape can be hard. Strong winds and different currents meet in this area. The cold Antarctic current hits the warm Agulhas Current. This can create rogue waves up to 30 metres high. These waves are big enough to sink large ships. About 150 ships have sunk around Agulhas. Because of this, a lighthouse was built in 1848.

These winds, along with the cold Antarctic Circumpolar Current, collide with the warm Agulhas Current. These conflicting currents of different densities can create massive rogue waves. Some of these waves can reach heights of 30 metres.
Because of these hazards, the cape has a long history of maritime accidents. It is believed that approximately 150 ships have sunk in the waters around Agulhas. The coast is littered with the wrecks of many vessels. Notable examples include the Arniston, which sank in 1815, and the Geortyrder in 1849. Other lost ships include the Elise in 1879, the Cooranga in 1964, the Gwendola in 1968, the Federal Lakes in 1975, and the Gouritz in 1981. These shipwrecks highlight the dangers posed by the combination of strong winds, shallow banks, and colliding currents.
To protect sailors from these dangers, a lighthouse was constructed in 1848.
