If an error exists, it must be subtracted from the primary reading. For example, if a tool has a 0.013 cm error, the user must adjust the final result. Accuracy also changes based on the size of the tool. A 150 mm digital caliper might have an accuracy of ± 0.02 mm. However, as the tool gets longer, the accuracy may decline to ± 0.04 mm for a 200–300 mm measurement.

Digital technology has changed how these tools function internally. Many digital models use a capacitive linear encoder. This system uses narrow emitter plates and a long receiver plate on a circuit board. As the slider moves, it creates an interference pattern of electrical capacitance. This pattern changes in a repeating linear fashion. This allows the tool to calculate the exact position of the slider. This technology makes digital calipers highly efficient for modern technical work.
