Caesarea Maritima is an ancient city on the coast of Israel.

Caesarea Maritima is a famous ancient city on the coast of Israel.

Building the city was a huge task for engineers. The coast had no natural bays to protect ships. To fix this, King Herod the Great built a massive artificial harbor named Sebastos.
This site has a very long history. It began in the 4th century BCE as a Phoenician village. It was once called Straton's Tower.
Life in the city was very busy and grand.

Over time, the city changed many times. It was a major center for Christianity during the Byzantine period. Later, it became a smaller fishing village. In the 11th century, Muslim rulers rebuilt its walls. Crusaders also came and made it an important port. In 1265, the Mamluks destroyed parts of it. In 1948, during a war, the remaining village was destroyed. Now, archaeologists study the ruins to learn about the past. You can still see beautiful stone columns and old mosaics today.
Caesarea Maritima is an ancient and medieval port city.
The city's origins began long before the Roman era. In the 4th century BCE, it was a Phoenician colony. This settlement was known as Straton's Tower, named after the ruler of Sidon.
King Herod the Great transformed the site significantly. Between 22 and 9 BCE, he began a massive building project.
Building the Sebastos harbor was a massive engineering feat.
Life in the city was grand and highly organized.

The city's importance changed through many different eras. During the Byzantine period, it was a major center for Christianity. Following the Muslim conquest in 640, it lost its status as a provincial capital. It was known in Arabic as Qisarya. In the 11th century, Muslim rulers re-fortified the city. Later, Crusaders conquered the site and strengthened its port. However, the Mamluks slighted the city in 1265. By the early modern period, it had become a small fishing village.
The site experienced significant changes during the 20th century. In February 1948, during the Palestine war and Nakba, the population changed. Some people fled after an attack on a bus by the Lehi group. The remainder were expelled by the Palmach. The Palmach then demolished the houses in the village. Following these events, archaeologists began excavating the ancient ruins. They worked during the 1950s and 1960s. Today, visitors can see beautiful mosaics and stone columns.
