Approximately 1.6 million people live in its urban area. This makes it a vital hub for the country. The city is positioned northwest of Buenos Aires. It also lies west of the city of Santa Fe.

The geography of the area is defined by water and hills. The city spreads across the plain of the Humid Pampa. It sits on both banks of the Suquía River. This river flows into the San Roque reservoir. From there, the water becomes the Primero River. The river eventually reaches the Mar Chiquita salt lake. A small stream called La Cañada meets the river near the center. The river's flow changes with the seasons. It can reach a peak of 24 cubic meters per second in summer.

History in this region began with the Comechingones people. They lived in small communities known as ayllus. In 1570, the Viceroy of Peru assigned Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera to found a settlement. He led an expedition of 48 men into the territory. On 24 June 1573, a group of 100 men arrived at the site. Cabrera officially founded the settlement on 6 July 1573. He named it after the Spanish city of Córdoba.

The settlement was originally on the left bank of the river. After four years, authorities moved it to the opposite bank. In 1577, Lorenzo Suárez de Figueroa planned a new grid of 70 blocks.

The Jesuit Order played a massive role in the city's development. They arrived in the settlement in 1599. In 1613, they founded the National University of Córdoba. This is the oldest university in the country. Because of this institution, the city earned the nickname "the learned." The Jesuits also managed five Reducciones in nearby fertile valleys. These included places like Alta Gracia and Jesús María. In 1767, King Charles III ordered the expulsion of the Jesuits. This changed how the religious order managed their foundations.
