For a long time, two groups fought for land. One group was the Byzantine Empire. The other group was the Ottoman Turks.

The Byzantine-Ottoman wars were a long series of conflicts. These battles were between the Byzantine Greeks and the Ottoman Turks. These wars changed the map of the world forever. They led to the end of the Byzantine Empire. At the same time, they helped the Ottoman Empire rise to power.
Many things caused the Byzantine Empire to weaken over time. The empire faced many rivals in places like Serbia and Bulgaria. They also dealt with internal problems and civil wars. Because of these troubles, they could not defend their borders well. They often had to move troops away from one area to help another.
History shows how the Ottoman Turks began to grow. It started with a leader named Osman I. He established a small group called a beylik.
There were many specific battles and dates during this time. In 1265 and 1289, the Turks took Söğüt and Eskişehir. In 1326, the Ottomans captured the city of Bursa. The Byzantines lost the city of Nicaea in 1331 after a big battle.
These wars connect to how the world works today. The fall of Constantinople changed how people traveled and traded. It forced explorers to look for new paths across the sea.
The Byzantine–Ottoman wars were a series of decisive conflicts. They involved the Byzantine Greeks and the Ottoman Turks. These wars led to the destruction of the Byzantine Empire. They also caused the rise of the Ottoman Empire.
Several factors caused the Byzantine Empire to weaken. The empire had been in a weak state for a long time. The 4th Crusade had already partitioned their territory. Later, the Palaiologos dynasty failed to restore full strength. The Byzantines faced many rivals in Europe. These included groups in Epirus, Serbia, and Bulgaria.
In Anatolia, the decay of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum created instability. This allowed nobles called ghazis to set up fiefdoms. One such leader was Osman I. He established the Ottoman beylik, or small state.
Byzantine leaders tried various ways to stop the Ottoman advance. Emperor Andronikos II tried to build new forts in Asia Minor. He also ordered vigorous training for his army. He even hired the Catalan Company to fight. This group of 6,500 mercenaries drove the Turks back in 1303. However, the mercenaries later killed their leader, Roger de Flor. This caused them to pillage the countryside instead. These internal conflicts prevented any lasting Byzantine success.
Civil wars also weakened the Byzantine ability to defend themselves. A major civil war occurred between 1321 and 1328. This war involved Andronikos II and his grandson, Andronikos III. During this time, the Ottomans captured the city of Bursa in 1326.
In 1354, the Ottomans reached the European mainland. They captured the fort of Kallipolis, also known as Gallipoli. This was a major turning point in the wars. It allowed the Ottomans to surround Constantinople more effectively.
Constantinople finally fell to the Ottomans in 1453. This event formally ended the long conflicts. Some Byzantine holdouts lasted until 1479, but the empire was gone.
