Instead of buying everything from other companies, they build it themselves. They use their skills to make electric motors and electronic controls. They even have a huge battery branch called FinDreams Battery. This group is the second largest maker of electric vehicle batteries in the world. They are famous for making a special type of battery called the Blade battery. This helps them keep control over how their cars are built.

The story of BYD Auto began in January 2003. A man named Wang Chuanfu started the company. He bought a smaller company called Xi'an Qinchuan Automobile. This gave him the tools to start making cars right away. At first, they made cars with petrol engines. The first one was the BYD F3, which started in 2005.

A key part of BYD's success is its strategy of vertical integration. This means the company makes many of its own components in-house. They leverage the parent group's expertise in battery manufacturing to create electric motors and electronic controls.

Their battery subsidiary, FinDreams Battery, is the second largest producer of electric vehicle batteries globally, trailing only CATL. FinDreams specializes in lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. One of their most notable products is the proprietary Blade battery. This internal control over the supply chain allows them to manage costs and technology directly.

The history of BYD Auto began in January 2003. The founder, Wang Chuanfu, established the automotive division after acquiring Xi'an Qinchuan Automobile. This acquisition cost HK$269 million for a 77% stake. While the purchase caused some disapproval among shareholders, it provided vital car manufacturing technology. It also provided an automobile production license, which was difficult to obtain at the time. The company's early years involved significant learning and some setbacks. For example, a prototype codenamed 316 was scrapped after costing CN¥100 million in research and development.

BYD's first successful mass-produced vehicle was the BYD F3 sedan. It entered production in April 2005 with a price of approximately US$10,000. The F3 was very popular and sold over 63,000 units in its first year.

By June 2007, the 100,000th F3 had rolled off the assembly line. During this era, BYD often used engines from Mitsubishi Motors. Eventually, they began creating their own engines by improving existing blueprints. Some critics noted that early models like the F3 and F0 resembled designs from Toyota.

However, Wang Chuanfu maintained that the company only utilized non-patented technologies.

The company has a long history of pioneering new energy technology. In 2008, BYD introduced the F3DM at the Geneva Motor Show. This was the world's first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle.

BYD also expanded into commercial vehicles by acquiring Hunan Midea Coach Company in 2009. This allowed them to produce electric buses, such as the BYD K9. These buses can achieve 50% fast charging in just 30 minutes. In 2010, they also formed a joint venture with Mercedes-Benz Group AG to create the Denza brand.

Since 2020, BYD Auto has seen massive growth in sales. This growth is driven by the rising market share of NEVs in China. In 2022, the company made the strategic choice to end production of internal combustion engine vehicles. They now focus entirely on new energy vehicles. In 2023, BYD became the best-selling car brand in China, surpassing Volkswagen.

This expansion makes BYD the third most valuable car manufacturer in the world based on market capitalization. While the company has grown, it has also faced scrutiny. Critics have raised concerns regarding business practices, labor issues, and environmental impacts. Despite these challenges, BYD remains a central figure in the global transition to electric transportation.
