Today, the area is very important for energy. The South Pars Gas field is nearby. It is the largest natural gas field in the world. There is also a nuclear power plant there.

The province has many sites of great cultural importance. There are 45 sites listed by the Cultural Heritage Organization of Iran. 
Bushehr is a major center for energy today. It is home to the South Pars Gas field. This is the largest natural gas field in the whole world. There is also a nuclear power plant in the province. This plant uses light water technology. The Asaluyeh industrial zone is also very busy. About 70,000 foreign engineers and technicians work there.
Life in the province includes many interesting things. Football is the most popular sport to play. The city has two famous teams named Shahin and Pars Jonoubi jam. In 1913, a French excavation team traced the origins of Bushehr back to the Elamite Empire. They discovered the remains of an ancient city called Lyan. This city contained a temple built specifically to protect the compound from naval attacks. These ruins are located 10 kilometers south of the modern city of Bushehr.
Throughout the centuries, various powers fought for control of this strategic coastline. The Portuguese invaded the city of Bushehr in 1506. They remained in control until Shah Abbas Safavi liberated the Persian Gulf region. Later, Nader Shah of the Afsharid dynasty rose to prominence in the area by 1734. He established a massive naval fleet with 8,000 to 10,000 personnel. Nader Shah even renamed the city Bandar e Naderiyeh to honor himself. He hired an Englishman named John Elton to assist in building his fleet.
By the Qajar era, Bushehr had evolved into a massive international commercial center. It became Iran's primary port city within the Persian Gulf. Many nations established diplomatic and commercial offices in the city. These included Britain, Russia, Italy, France, Germany, Norway, and the Ottoman Empire. The British influence grew steadily during this period. Reports indicate that approximately 100 British ships docked at the port every year. 
The demographics of the province reflect a diverse cultural history. A large majority of the population speaks Persian, specifically the Fars dialect. A minority of the residents speak Arabic. Most inhabitants are Shia Muslims, while Sunnis make up 8.5% of the population. Historically, the Kurdish Zanganeh tribe moved here during the Safavid period. They formed a local government known as the Zanganeh bloc. Over time, these people assimilated and adopted local Persian and Turkic languages.
Population growth in the province has been steady and significant. In 2006, the census recorded 886,490 people living in 188,762 households. By 2011, the population rose to 1,032,949 people. The 2016 census measured the inhabitants at 1,163,400. Most of these people, over 71%, live in urban areas.
Today, Bushehr is a global center for energy and industrial production. The province hosts the South Pars Gas field, which is the largest natural gas field in the world. The Asaluyeh industrial zone sits 270 kilometers south of the capital. This zone employs roughly 70,000 foreign engineers and technicians. Additionally, the province is home to the Bushehr Nuclear Reactor. This is Iran's first nuclear power plant, designed by Siemens and built by Russians. Kharg Island also plays a critical role in the nation's petroleum exports.
Beyond industry, the province maintains a rich cultural and social life. Football is the most popular sport, featuring teams like Shahin-e Boushehr. The Cultural Heritage Organization of Iran recognizes 45 sites of historical significance. These include the Persian Gulf Beach and the Dutch Castle.
