He transitioned from a working boy in the Midwest to a global entertainer.

Cody's early life was shaped by movement and necessity. He was born in Le Claire, Iowa Territory. His family later lived in Ontario, Canada, near Mississauga. In 1853, the family moved to the Kansas Territory. Life in Kansas was marked by political conflict known as Bleeding Kansas. During this time, his father, Isaac Cody, faced violence for his antislavery views. Isaac died in 1857 from complications following an injury and illness. This loss forced young Bill to find work to support his family.

Cody held many different jobs throughout his youth. At age 11, he worked as a "boy extra" for Russell, Major, and Waddell. He rode along wagon trains to deliver messages between workers. At age 15, he became a rider for the Pony Express. While he claimed many roles like trapper or hotel manager, historians note some may be for publicity. His actual job involved riding messages from Leavenworth to a nearby telegraph station.

He also worked as a teamster in the 7th Kansas Cavalry during the Civil War.

As a scout, Cody performed incredible feats of endurance. He served as a civilian scout for the U.S. Army during the Indian Wars. One notable event involved a 350-mile ride through hostile territory.

He completed this journey in only 58 hours. He traveled between Fort Larned, Fort Zarah, Fort Hays, and Fort Dodge. He even covered the final 35 miles of this trip on foot. Because of this skill, General Philip Sheridan named him Chief of Scouts for the 5th Cavalry.

Cody's career as a showman brought the West to the world. In 1883, he founded Buffalo Bill's Wild West. This large company toured the United States extensively. Starting in 1887, he brought the show to Europe to perform for international audiences. The shows featured cowboy themes and episodes from the frontier. They often included reenactments of the Indian Wars. These performances allowed people far from the frontier to witness Western life.

His military service led to a complex history with the Medal of Honor. Cody was awarded the medal in 1872 for his bravery as a scout.

However, the medal was rescinded in 1917. This happened because Congress created a new hierarchy for military honors. The new rules required recipients to be officers or enlisted soldiers. Because Cody was a civilian scout, he was among 911 people to lose the award.

A legal brief argued that civilian scouts held the status of officers. They provided essential reconnaissance services to the military. The Army Board for Correction of Military Records agreed with this argument. This decision restored the honor to Cody and four other civilian scouts. Today, his legacy is tied to both the reality of frontier life and the spectacle of his shows.
