Buenos Aires Province is the largest and most populous province in Argentina.
The province sits in a very important location on the South American continent. It is bordered by several other Argentine provinces. To the northeast lies Entre Ríos, and Santa Fe is to the north. Córdoba sits to the northwest, while La Pampa is to the west. The provinces of Río Negro and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires border it to the south and northeast. To the northeast, the country of Uruguay sits across the Rio de la Plata. The entire eastern edge of the province meets the Atlantic Ocean.
The landscape is defined by the vast Pampas geographical region. Most of the province consists of this flat, fertile land. However, the extreme southern areas are often considered part of the Patagonia region. There are also two low mountain ranges located within the province. These are the Sierra de la Ventana and the Sierra de Tandil.

The climate is heavily influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean. This creates a temperate environment with four distinct seasons. The province can be divided into four main climatic zones. The northern and eastern regions are humid with warm summers. The Delta region is the warmest and wettest part of the province.

Human history in the region began with aboriginal peoples like the Charrúas and Querandíes. Spanish colonization began in the 16th century when Pedro de Mendoza founded Santa María del Buen Ayre in 1536. The settlement was later re-founded by Juan de Garay in 1580. For many years, the economy relied on the port of Buenos Aires. This port allowed for the export of meat and leather. Following independence from Spain in 1816, the province faced many civil wars. It even declared itself the independent State of Buenos Aires in 1852.
Rapid growth transformed the province during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Governor Dardo Rocha founded La Plata in 1882 to serve as the new capital.
The province manages its large population through a structured government. The provincial government is divided into three distinct branches. The executive branch is led by a popularly elected governor. The legislative branch is represented by the Legislature, which includes the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.
Nature and science also provide fascinating insights into the province. In 2021, researchers discovered a significant paleontological find near San Eduardo del Mar. They found a well-preserved fossilized skull of a juvenile Megatherium. This creature was a giant ground sloth that lived about 3.58 million years ago. This discovery shows how much history is still hidden in the earth. The province continues to be a place of both modern political influence and ancient natural wonders.
