Buenaventura Durruti was a prominent Spanish anarcho-syndicalist militant.
Durruti's path to radicalism began with personal and family experiences. He was born on July 14, 1896, in León, Spain. His parents were Santiago Durruti and Anastasia Dumange. In 1903, a nine-month strike involving his father ended in defeat. This event left his family in a state of destitution. Many family members faced blacklisting for their support of the strike. These early experiences with state repression shaped his political views. He moved away from traditional education to become a mechanic. By age fourteen, he entered the workforce to support his family.
His professional training as a mechanic led him into labor activism. He apprenticed under Melchor Martínez, a master mechanic and socialist leader. Durruti eventually qualified as a skilled lathe operator. In April 1913, he joined the Metalworkers' Union of the UGT. He soon became a local organizer for the union. However, Durruti grew dissatisfied with the socialist party leadership. He rejected electoral politics in favor of revolutionary socialism. He believed that socialism had to be active to be meaningful. This stance caused significant tension with established political leaders.
Durruti's activism often led to conflict with the Spanish state. In 1917, he led a solidarity action during an Asturian miners' strike. He refused to work until the miners' demands were met. This action earned him the nickname "the big one" among miners. Following a general strike, he faced persecution from the authorities. He fled to France in December 1917 to avoid arrest.
In the 1920s, Durruti engaged in more direct militant activities. He joined a group called Los Justicieros to fight state terrorism.
