These buildings follow the ideas of Buddhism. This faith began in India a long time ago.

There are three main types of buildings. First are monasteries, called vihāras, where monks live. Second are prayer halls, called chaityas. Third are stupas. A stupa is a round structure. It was made to keep sacred items safe. One very old stupa is in Vaishali, India. Another famous site is Sanchi. A king named Ashoka helped build it.

You might see different shapes like stupas, monasteries called vihāras, or prayer halls called chaityas. These structures help people practice their faith and come together. As Buddhism spread across Asia, the styles of these buildings changed in many ways. People adapted the designs to fit their own local traditions and needs.

There are three main types of early structures. Vihāras are monasteries where monks live and work. Chaityas are shrines or prayer halls used for worship. The stupa is a very important new development. A stupa was first used to protect and honor the relics of Gautama Buddha. One of the oldest known stupas is the Relic Stupa of Vaishali in Bihar, India. Over time, stupas were even added into prayer halls like the Ajanta and Ellora Caves. This helped create new ways for people to visit and pray.

Buddhism began in the Indian subcontinent around the 5th century BCE. One famous site is Sanchi in India.

A king named Ashoka helped build a stupa there between 273 and 236 BCE. The site grew over two hundred years and became more decorative. It has beautiful stone gateways at the four cardinal points. For a long time, artists did not show the Buddha as a person. Instead, they used special symbols to represent him. It was not until the 1st century CE that human images of Buddha appeared.

As the religion moved, the buildings grew more diverse. In Indonesia, the Javanese Shailendra dynasty built the massive Borobudur temple in the 9th century.

These often have golden, bell-shaped towers called chedis. In China, many monasteries were built, including about 45,000 of them.

Architecture also changed based on where people lived. In Japan, builders changed styles to handle the rainy and humid weather.

In Hawaii, Japanese immigrants created unique styles. They did not always have the same tools or materials as they had in Japan. Some people turned large houses into temples to save money. Others used concrete to build new houses of worship. These different styles show how people can keep their traditions alive in new places.

Buddhist architecture is a specialized building style that follows the religious practices and philosophy of Buddhism. These structures serve several vital roles for the community. They provide places for monastic life, ritual ceremonies, and commemoration.

As Buddhism spread from the Indian subcontinent, these architectural forms evolved. They adapted to different cultures across Southeast Asia and East Asia. This movement led to a diverse range of regional styles.

Early Buddhist architecture relies on three primary types of structures. The first is the vihāra, which is a monastery for monks. The second is the chaitya, also known as a chaitya-griha, which serves as a prayer hall or shrine. The third and perhaps most iconic form is the stupa. Originally, the stupa functioned to safeguard and venerate the relics of Gautama Buddha. Over time, religious practices changed. This led architects to incorporate stupas directly into the design of chaitya-grihas. You can see this integration in the famous Ajanta and Ellora Caves.

History shows that these forms grew more complex over many centuries. One of the earliest known stupas is the Relic Stupa of Vaishali in Bihar, India. Another significant site is Sanchi, which features a stupa built by King Ashoka between 273 and 236 BCE.

The Sanchi site began as a simple structure. Later, it was encased in a more decorative one. Over two centuries, the site was elaborated with stone gateways at the four cardinal points. Decoration also increased during the last two centuries BCE. Architects began adding tablets and friezes with human figures. However, the Buddha was not represented in human form until the 1st century CE. Before that, artists used aniconic symbols to represent him.

As Buddhism moved into different regions, the architecture diverged. In Indonesia, the Javanese Shailendra dynasty reached an architectural peak in the 8th and 9th centuries CE. They built Borobudur, which is the largest Buddhist temple in the world.

Borobudur is a massive stupa designed as a stepped pyramid. It follows the plan of a stone mandala. The structure is incredibly detailed. It features 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. The walls and balustrades contain 2,500 square metres of exquisite bas-relief decorations. Additionally, 72 openwork stupas surround the circular platforms, each holding a statue of the Buddha.

In Thailand, Buddhist temples are known as wats. A wat typically consists of two main parts. The Phutthawat is the worship area dedicated to the Buddha. The Sangkhawat is the monastery area dedicated to the Sangha.

Thai temples often feature a golden chedi. This is a bell-shaped stupa tower covered in gold leaf that holds a relic chamber. Many temples also include a Prang tower in the center. These complexes include various buildings like the Ubosot, Wihan, and Ho trai. Architects often use multiple roof tiers on these structures. While two or three tiers are common, royal temples may have four.

In Japan, Buddhism arrived via the Three Kingdoms of Korea in the 6th century. Initially, builders tried to reproduce continental styles exactly. Eventually, they developed local versions to suit Japanese tastes. They also had to solve problems caused by the humid and rainy weather.

For a long time, Buddhism and Shintoism were connected through the philosophy of Shinbutsu-shūgō. This meant temples were often built inside or next to Shinto shrines. This connection was officially severed during the Meiji Restoration. However, the cultural connection remains visible in Japan today.

Even in Hawaii, Buddhist architecture shows unique adaptations. Japanese immigrants brought their knowledge of Buddhism to the islands. However, they lacked the same materials and tools available in Japan. This resulted in five distinct styles. The first was the converted house, where plantation houses were turned into worship spaces. The second was the traditional Japanese style using beam and post structures. The third was a simplified Japanese style with straight roofs. The fourth was the Indian Western style, which combined Indian, Japanese, and Western influences. Finally, the house of worship style became popular in the 1960s. These styles show how people adapt their sacred spaces to new environments.
