Brunei's history is tied to ancient maritime trade networks. Archaeological research shows the area was part of the Maritime Jade Road. This network existed from 2000 BC to 1000 AD. 
The Sultanate of Brunei rose to great power in the 15th and 16th centuries. Local history says Awang Alak Betatar founded the state around AD 1400. He was the first Muslim ruler. During the reign of Sultan Bolkiah from 1485 to 1528, the empire reached its peak. At this time, Brunei controlled much of Borneo. This included modern-day Sabah and Sarawak. The empire also had influence over the Sulu archipelago. 
European contact brought both change and conflict to the region. The crew of the Magellan expedition visited in 1521. Later, Spain fought the Castilian War against Brunei in 1578. This war was part of a larger struggle for control in Southeast Asia. During the 19th century, the Bruneian Empire began to decline. The Sultanate ceded Kuching to James Brooke. It also ceded Sabah to the British North Borneo Chartered Company.
Brunei spent many years under British influence. It became a British protectorate in 1888. In 1906, a British resident was assigned to manage colonial matters. After the Japanese occupation during World War II, a new constitution was written in 1959. In 1962, a small armed rebellion occurred. This event was related to the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation. Following these changes, Britain's protectorate ended on January 1, 1984. 
Today, Brunei is an industrialized nation with significant wealth. This wealth comes from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields. The economy grew very fast in recent decades. For example, the GDP increased by 56% between 1999 and 2008. 

The government is an absolute monarchy. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has led the country since 1967.
