The brothers followed a specific methodology to collect and record folk stories. They did not simply invent tales; they gathered them from people they knew. Much of their data came from educated, urban acquaintances. They would listen to stories and then carefully document them. Between 1812 and 1857, they expanded and revised their collections many times. They refined the language and the themes of these tales to improve them. They were raised in Steinau in a large family of nine children. Their lives changed greatly when their father died in 1796. This death caused extreme poverty for the family. The brothers became exceptionally close because they had to rely on each other. They eventually studied at the University of Marburg. There, they were inspired by their professor, Friedrich von Savigny. He encouraged their interest in history and philology, the study of language in historical texts.

Despite their academic success, the brothers often faced financial hardship. While at Marburg, they were excluded from tuition aid due to their social status. Wilhelm once wrote that his family often ate only three portions of food once a day. They eventually found steady work as librarians in Kassel. This employment provided them with the time needed for intensive research. In 1830, they moved to the University of Göttingen. Jacob became a professor and head librarian there. However, they lost these posts in 1837 after protesting political changes. They were part of the "Göttingen Seven," a group of professors who refused to sign an oath of allegiance to the King of Hanover.
