The canal was commissioned by Francis Egerton, the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater. The Duke owned coal mines in Worsley that supplied fuel for the steam engines of the Industrial Revolution. Before the canal, he moved coal using packhorses or the Mersey and Irwell Navigation. These methods were expensive and inefficient. River transport was difficult because boats were affected by tide levels. Additionally, the Duke's underground mines suffered from constant flooding. The geology of the Middle Coal Measures caused water to seep through permeable sandstone into the coal seams.

To solve these problems, the Duke and his manager, John Gilbert, developed a plan for a canal. They hired James Brindley, a technical expert, to help. Brindley suggested a route that crossed the River Irwell via an aqueduct. An aqueduct is a structure built to carry water across another feature like a river.

This route would make connecting to future canals much easier. The plan also included an underground canal at Worsley. This tunnel served three main purposes. It provided drainage for the mines, offered a reliable water source for the surface canal, and removed the need to lift coal to the surface. This allowed boats to carry more cargo; one horse could pull a boat with ten times the cargo of a cart.

Construction of the section from Worsley to Manchester began in 1760. The first boat crossed the Barton Aqueduct on 17 July 1761. The total cost for this initial section was £168,000. This investment was highly successful. Within one year of opening, the price of coal in Manchester fell by about half. The Duke's warehouse in Manchester was a timber-frame design with load-bearing brick walls and cast iron posts. Although the warehouse was badly damaged by fire in 1789, it was eventually rebuilt.

The canal was later extended from Manchester to Runcorn to reach the River Mersey. This extension was completed in full by March 1776. Connecting to the river required a flight of ten locks, which were called the "wonder of their time." These locks helped boats manage the change in water levels. To prevent silt from blocking the entrance, workers built a channel called the Duke's Gut. At high tide, the gates were closed. As the tide ebbed, the gates were opened to release water. This process scoured the silt away from the locks.

Building the extension faced several obstacles. Sir Richard Brooke of Norton Priory opposed the canal because he did not want boatmen disturbing his game and wildfowl. A compromise was reached where the canal followed specific rules near his house. The canal had to stay a certain distance away, and the towpath was placed on the south side to keep it far from his home. There were also rules against mooring vessels near his house. The total cost for the construction from Worsley to Manchester and from Manchester to Runcorn reached £220,000.

The Bridgewater Canal also saw further developments and competition. In 1795, the Duke secured an act to extend the canal from Worsley to Leigh. This allowed coal from the Leigh districts to be supplied to Manchester. Later, the canal faced intense competition from the Macclesfield Canal and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Despite these challenges, the canal has a unique history. It is one of the few canals in Britain that was never nationalised. It remains privately owned to this day.
