The name comes from Old English words meaning "broad ford." This refers to a crossing of the Bradford Beck.

Around this crossing, a settlement grew during Anglo-Saxon times.

The city grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution. It became an international center for textile manufacture. Bradford specialized in making worsted cloth from wool. This massive success earned it the nickname "Woolopolis." People also called it the "Wool City."

Its location provided essential resources for this growth. The area had access to coal and iron ore. It also had supplies of soft water. These resources allowed a large manufacturing base to develop. The population exploded as more workers arrived for textile jobs.

Industrial growth was driven by several key factors. First, the availability of local coal provided power. Second, local sandstone was used to build large mills.

Third, new canal and turnpike road links encouraged trade. However, the rapid growth created a serious water shortage. In 1854, the Bradford Corporation bought the water company. They started a large engineering program to improve supplies. They brought soft water from areas like Airedale and Wharfedale.

This helped improve urban sanitary conditions by 1882.

As the city expanded, it became a diverse place. Many people migrated to Bradford for work. In the 1840s, many migrants came from Ireland. By 1851, about 10% of the population was Irish-born.

During the 1820s and 1830s, people also arrived from Germany. Many were Jewish merchants. They became very influential in the textile export business. They often worked in an area known as Little Germany.

These merchants helped Bradford become a global exporter of goods.

Success brought heavy environmental and social costs. The city became known as the most polluted in England. Over 200 factory chimneys produced black, sulphurous smoke. This pollution led to frequent outbreaks of cholera and typhoid. The living conditions were often very difficult for workers. Sadly, only 30% of children born to textile workers reached age fifteen. This resulted in a life expectancy of just over eighteen years.

These challenges were part of the era of rapid industrialization.

Industry eventually diversified beyond textiles. In the early 20th century, the Jowett Motor Company manufactured cars and vans.

The Scott Motorcycle Company also produced motorcycles and engines. By the mid-20th century, deindustrialisation caused the textile sector to decline. This shift led to economic and social challenges. Today, Bradford has a large economy worth about £10 billion. Most of this comes from manufacturing and financial industries.
