Bologna is a major urban center in northern Italy. It serves as the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region.
One of Bologna's most significant features is its academic history. The University of Bologna is the oldest university in continuous operation. It was established in AD 1088.

The history of the site stretches back to the 3rd millennium BCE. Human habitation in the area is very ancient. By the end of the 6th century BCE, the Etruscans established the city of Felsina.
In the Middle Ages, Bologna experienced rapid growth and political shifts. The Lombards captured the city in 727–728. They built a new district called the addizione longobarda. Later, the city became a free municipality. It grew into one of the largest European cities by population. A system of canals helped it become a commercial center. These canals allowed ships and barges to move goods. In 1249, King Enzo of Sardinia was captured at the Battle of Fossalta. He remained a prisoner in Bologna for over 22 years.
Political rule changed many times during the later Middle Ages. The city saw periods of rule by the Pope and various families. In 1348, the Black Death arrived. Before the plague, the population was between 40,000 and 50,000. After the plague, it dropped to between 20,000 and 25,000. The Bentivoglio family later established a signoria, which is a type of rule by a single lord. However, Pope Julius II deposed the Bentivoglio in 1506. Papal troops entered the city on 10 November 1506. This began a long period of papal rule. Some historians view this era as a time of decline.
Despite some decline, Bologna saw important cultural developments. In 1530, Emperor Charles V was crowned here. This was the last time a pope crowned an emperor. The city also saw the rise of the Bolognese School of painters. Famous artists like Annibale Carracci worked in this tradition.

Modern Bologna focuses on sustainability and quality of life. In 2022, it was named the best city in Italy for overall quality of life.
