The city's physical landscape is defined by its varied topography. The elevation ranges from 780 to 1,612 meters above sea level. Many hills dominate the urban landscape. These hills act as headwaters for several rivers and streams. These waterways create nine distinct catchment areas across the city. The drainage system includes areas like Likhubula, Lunzu, and Mudi. The city is also surrounded by mountains. These include Mount Soche, Ndirande, Chiradzulu, and Michiru. These mountains form the Michiru Mountain Conservation Area.

Geology plays a significant role in the city's structure. The bedrock consists of two ancient rock types from the Basement Complex. This formation dates back about 500 million years to the late Pre-Cambrian period. Pyroxene granulite gneiss covers more than 50% of the city. Syenitic gneiss accounts for about 40% of the area. These rocks are impervious, meaning they do not let water pass through easily. This makes them poor aquifers for groundwater. However, they are useful for building roads and structures. Blantyre sits on the edge of the Eastern African Rift. Because of this, the city is prone to earthquakes from local faults.

The history of Blantyre began with missionary work in 1876. The Church of Scotland founded the settlement. It was named after Blantyre in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. This was the birthplace of the explorer David Livingstone. Henry Henderson chose the site for the mission. Later, David Clement Scott led the mission from 1881 to 1898. He built the St Michael and All Angels Church between 1888 and 1891.

The city later merged with its sister city, Limbe, in 1956. Limbe had developed rapidly after 1906 due to the railway and tobacco industries. Today, the city is a major transport node. It connects Malawi to Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia, and Tanzania.

Makata and Limbe are the only two heavy industrial sites. They host more than 30 companies each. Other areas like Chitawira are light industrial sites. These industries produce shoes, maize flour, beer, soft drinks, and tobacco. Most industrial sites are located along the banks of major rivers.

Demographics show a diverse population of many ethnic groups. The Lomwe are the largest group at 39.59%. The Ngoni are the largest minority at 19.12%. Other groups include the Yao, Chewa, and Sena. Religion is also very diverse in the city. Catholicism is the largest denomination at 17.94%. The Church of Central Africa Presbyterian is the largest minority at 17.61%. Islam and other Christian groups also have significant presence. The climate is a tropical savanna type. It features a rainy season from November to April. The dry season lasts from May to October.
