Another version says it was named after a king called Bhupala. In the early 1600s, it was a small village in the Gond kingdom. Later, a soldier named Dost Mohammad Khan helped establish the Bhopal State.

Between 1819 and 1926, the state was ruled by four women called Begums. This was very rare for royalty at that time. One ruler, Sikandar, was even as honored as a British knight.

The city has many important places for learning and science. It is home to many big institutes like AIIMS and MANIT.

There is even a facility for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Bhopal is also a strong center for business and industry.

However, the city faced a very hard time in December 1984. A pesticide plant leaked deadly gases, causing a huge industrial disaster. This event changed the city forever and is still talked about today.

The weather in Bhopal changes quite a bit during the year. Summers start in late March and can get very hot. In May, temperatures often go above 40 °C. The monsoon season brings heavy rain and thunderstorms from June to September. This season provides about 1020 mm of rain. Winters arrive in November and stay until early March. During these months, the air is cool and dry. On some cold nights in January, the temperature can drop close to freezing.

The geography of Bhopal is defined by its position on the Malwa plateau. This means the land is higher than the north Indian plains. The city sits in central India, just north of the upper limit of the Vindhya mountain ranges. The elevation is uneven, with many small hills within the city limits.

In the north, you will find the Idgah, Arera, and Shyamala hills. The Katara hills are located in the southern region. The city is divided into two main parts. Old Bhopal is in the north, near the VIP road and the lake. New Bhopal is in the south and is where most malls are located.

The largest is the Upper Lake, also called Bada Talab. It was built in the 11th century and has a surface area of 36 square kilometers. The Lower Lake, or Chhota Talaab, is much smaller with a surface area of 1.29 square kilometers. The local municipal corporation works with citizens to clean and maintain these vital water bodies.

The history of Bhopal is filled with legends and changing rulers. Some folklore suggests the city was founded by the 11th-century Malwa king, Raja Bhoja.

One story claims the name comes from a dam, or "pal," built by his minister. Another version says the king built a lake called Bhoj Tal to cure himself of leprosy. In the early 17th century, Bhopal was a small village in the Gond kingdom. Dost Mohammad Khan, a soldier in the Mughal army, later established the Bhopal State.

He built the Fatehgarh fort in the 1720s, which helped the village grow into a city.

Bhopal had a unique period of leadership under several women. Between 1819 and 1926, the state was ruled by four women known as Begums.

Qudsia Begum was the first woman ruler. She was followed by her granddaughter, Shah Jehan. Another ruler, Sikandar, was so highly honored by the British that she became a female knight. The Begums were responsible for many important developments. They established the city's waterworks, railways, and a postal system. The last sovereign Nawab, Hamidullah Khan, ruled until India gained independence in 1947.

In December 1984, Bhopal experienced the worst industrial disaster in history. A pesticide manufacturing plant owned by Union Carbide leaked toxic gases.

The leak included about 32 tons of methyl isocyanate, or MIC. This gas caused massive harm to the people of the city. While official records initially noted around 4,000 deaths, some estimates suggest up to 15,000 people died from the accident and related medical issues. The disaster left a lasting impact on the environment. Toxic waste has contaminated the soil and groundwater near the site. This event remains a major part of local social and political discussions.

Today, Bhopal is a major economic and educational hub. It is one of the central financial pillars of Madhya Pradesh. The city's nominal GDP was estimated at INR 44,175 crores for the 2020–21 period.

It houses many important research and educational institutions. These include AIIMS, MANIT, and the Indian Space Research Organisation's Master Control Facility.

The city is also known for being clean. It was rated the cleanest state capital in India for three years from 2017 to 2019. In 2023, it received a 5-star Garbage Free City rating.
