In London, he studied history and the arts. He learned about new ideas for independence there. He also joined a group called the Lautaro Lodge. This group wanted freedom for many places in Latin America.
His journey to leadership involved many difficult choices. In 1810, he joined the movement to revolt against Spanish rule. He worked with other leaders to create a national congress.
There were many hard moments during the war. In 1814, he fought at the Battle of Rancagua.

Bernardo O'Higgins Riquelme was a central leader in the struggle for Chilean independence.
O'Higgins had a complex family background. He was the illegitimate son of Ambrosio O'Higgins, a Spanish officer from Ireland. His mother was Isabel Riquelme, a prominent woman from Chillán. Because his father was a junior officer at the time of his birth, Bernardo was raised by his mother's family. He later lived with the Albano family in Talca. At age 15, his father sent him to Lima for his education. Later, at age 17, he moved to London to complete his studies. In London, he studied history and the arts. He also joined the Lautaro Lodge, a group dedicated to Latin American independence. This group was separate from the Freemasons and supported the Catholic Church.
Political changes in Europe triggered the movement in South America. In 1808, Napoleon took control of Spain. This event caused many leaders in Chile to seek autonomy. On September 18, 1810, O'Higgins joined the revolt against the French-dominated Spanish government.

O'Higgins' military career began with significant challenges. He had little formal training and sometimes suffered from poor health. In 1813, when Spain attempted to reconquer Chile, O'Higgins mobilized a local militia. He won a victory at Linares, which earned him a promotion to colonel. During the Battle of El Roble, he showed great courage. He famously ordered his men to live with honor or die with glory. At one point, the Santiago government gave him command of the army. However, political tension with the Carreras remained high. In 1814, O'Higgins supported the Treaty of Lircay to stop the fighting. This decision caused a major feud with José Miguel Carrera, who led a coup to overthrow the government.
The conflict reached a breaking point at the Battle of Rancagua in October 1814.
In 1817, O'Higgins and San Martín led a successful campaign to reclaim Chile.
The legacy of Bernardo O'Higgins is visible throughout Chile today. He is honored as a primary architect of the Chilean state.
