Long ago, they had great kingdoms. One king was named Masinissa. He helped bring people together.
Some people call them Berbers. But many prefer the name Amazigh. This name can mean "noble."
Today, they still share their culture. They are very proud of their history.

They speak many different languages. These languages belong to the Afroasiatic family. Most of these languages are hard for others to understand.
Long ago, the Amazigh had great kingdoms. One famous king was named Masinissa. He ruled the kingdom of Numidia. Later, many Berber groups made big empires. These included the Almoravids and the Almohads.
Ancient art shows their long history. People found cave paintings in the Tassili n'Ajjer region.

The history of the Imazighen is incredibly deep. 
In ancient times, several independent Berber states emerged. 
The Arab conquests brought major cultural shifts to the region. This period started a process called Arabization.
Science helps us understand how these people are connected to the land.
Today, a strong trans-national movement exists to protect Amazigh identity. This is known as Berberism or the Berber Culture Movement.
