Archaeological evidence shows Greeks arrived in the late seventh century BC. They established a colony named Euesperides. The name likely referred to the fertile land in the area. The city was located on raised land near a lagoon. This area may have been deep enough for small sailing vessels. Early coins from 480 BC featured the silphium plant. This plant was a major symbol of trade in Cyrenaica. It was used as a medicine and a rich seasoning.

Political shifts led to the city being relocated and renamed.

In the 3rd century BC, the city was refounded as Berenice. This move happened under Ptolemaic control. Some suggest the relocation occurred because lagoons were silting up. Others believe it was punishment for opposing the rulers Berenice and Ptolemy III. Berenice eventually became a prosperous Roman city. It thrived for about 600 years. During this time, it became the chief center of Cyrenaica. It even served as a Christian bishopric with recorded bishops like Ammon. However, the city declined after the Arab conquest in the 7th century.

For centuries, Benghazi was part of the Ottoman Empire.
