Long ago, huge sheets of ice shaped this land. The mountain was once a large plateau. Today, the rocks are made of limestone and mudstone. These rocks formed in a shallow sea a very long time ago. You can find fossils in the layers. Many of these fossils are old sea shells. Some layers even hold fossils of coral.

Many people visit Benbulbin to walk. The south side is an easy walk because it slopes gently. The north side is a hard climb. High winds from the Atlantic Ocean hit that side.

Long ago, the area was a large, flat plateau. As the ice moved from the northeast to the southwest, it carved the mountain into its current form. The rocks here are made of limestone and mudstone. These layers formed in a shallow sea about 345 to 330 million years ago. You can find many fossils, like sea shells and coral, inside these rocks.

Many people visit the mountain for walking and hiking.

The south side is an easy walk because it has a gentle slope. There is even a paved path near the Glencar Waterfall. However, the north face is a very dangerous climb. High winds and storms from the Atlantic Ocean hit that side hard. From the top, you can see the coastal plain and the ocean. You can also try the Gortarowey Looped Walk to see the forest.

Special plants and animals live on the mountain. Some plants, like the fringed sandwort, might be 100,000 years old! These plants are Arctic-alpine species that like the cool air at high altitudes. You might see red-billed chough birds, which look like crows but have bright red bills. Other animals like foxes, hares, and badgers live nearby. The mountain is a very important place for nature.

Benbulbin is also full of stories and history. It is the setting for many Irish legends about warriors like the Fianna. The famous poet W. B. Yeats wrote many poems about this place. He even wrote his final poem, "Under Ben Bulben," about this area. He is buried in a churchyard in the shadow of the mountain.

It sits within the Dartry Mountains, a range in an area known as "Yeats Country." The name is an anglicisation of the Irish "Binn Ghulbain." In Irish, "Binn" means a peak or mountain. The word "ghulbain" might refer to a beak or jaw. It may also honor Conall Gulban, a son of Niall of the Nine Hostages. Because of its unique geological importance, Sligo County Council has designated it a protected County Geological Site.

The mountain's distinct shape resulted from massive geological processes.

During the last Ice Age, Ireland was covered by glaciers. Originally, Benbulbin was a large, expansive plateau. As glaciers moved from the northeast toward the southwest, they carved the land. This movement shaped the plateau into its current steep and flat formation. During this period, the mountain functioned as a nunatak. A nunatak is a peak of rock that remains uncovered by ice while glaciers surround it.

The rock layers of Benbulbin tell a story of ancient oceans. These rocks formed approximately 345 to 330 million years ago. This occurred during the Viséan Stage of the Carboniferous Period. At that time, the region was a shallow sea. The mountain is composed of limestones resting on top of mudstones. The uppermost layer is the Dartry Limestone Formation, which is thick and hard. Below this lies the thinner Glencar Limestone Formation. The lower slopes consist of the Benbulben Shale Formation, which is made of shaly mudstone. Fossils are found throughout these layers. These include many fossilised sea shells and some corals within the shale.

Benbulbin is a significant destination for hikers and walkers. The mountain offers two very different experiences depending on the route. The north face is a hazardous climb. This side faces the Atlantic Ocean and bears the brunt of high winds and storms. In contrast, the south side is an easy walk due to its gentle slope. A paved path exists on the south face near the Glencar Waterfall. From the summit, visitors can see the Atlantic Ocean and the coastal plain of north County Sligo. The Gortarowey Looped Walk is another option. This 1.5-hour trail runs through forests and open land overlooking Donegal Bay.

The mountain's high altitude creates a unique environment for specialized life.

It hosts many Arctic-alpine species that thrive in cooler temperatures. Some of these plants are found nowhere else in Ireland. Research from 2012 suggests the fringed sandwort has been present since the last Ice Age. These endemic plants are believed to be around 100,000 years old. This discovery suggests Ireland's ecology might predate the Ice Age. Other notable plants include Alpine saxifrage and snowbed willow. Animals like the red-billed chough also live here. These birds resemble crows or ravens but possess bright red bills. You may also see foxes, hares, or badgers.

History and legends are deeply tied to this landscape.

Irish legends place the Fianna, a band of 3rd-century warriors, in these hunting grounds. The mountain is also linked to the story of Diarmuid and Gráinne. It is said to be their resting place. In the 6th century, St. Columba fought a battle at Cúl Dreimhne on the plain below. More recent history includes the Irish Civil War. In September 1922, six IRA soldiers, known as the "Noble Six," were killed on the slopes. The mountain also saw military plane crashes during World War II. In 1943, a USAAF Boeing B-17G crashed on nearby Truskmore. An RAF Catalina also crashed in the mountains in 1941.

Finally, Benbulbin holds great cultural importance in literature. The famous poet W. B. Yeats used the mountain frequently in his work. He lived in "Yeats Country," where the mountain is a central feature. He wrote about the sights of the area in his poem "Under Ben Bulben." This was his final poem. Yeats is buried in Drumcliffe Churchyard, which sits in the shadow of Benbulbin. The mountain remains a powerful symbol in Irish poetry and identity.
