To cast a large bell, founders use a two-part mould. They first construct an inner core using porous materials like brick or coke. This core is covered in loam, a mixture of clay, straw, and horse manure. The loam is shaped to match the bell's interior and dried with gentle heat. A smooth surface is then created using graphite and whiting.

The outer part of the mould is built within a perforated cast-iron case. This case is shaped to match the exterior of the bell. The entire assembly is inverted so the mouth faces downward. The mould is often clamped to a base-plate and buried in a casting pit. This pit helps the mould bear the heavy weight of the metal. It also allows the bell to cool evenly. Once the mould is ready, molten bell metal is poured into the space between the core and the outer case. After the metal cools, the bell undergoes harmonic tuning. This process ensures the bell is "in tune with itself." This means its strongest harmonics are in harmony with the strike note, producing a pure sound.
