Beersheba is the largest city located in the Negev desert of southern Israel. It is often called the "Capital of the Negev" because it serves as a major center for the region. The city covers a total area of 110 square kilometers. It acts as a vital administrative, cultural, and industrial hub for the surrounding desert area.

The name of the city is deeply connected to ancient water sources. According to the Book of Genesis, the name Be'er Sheba may mean "well of the oath" or "well of the seven." One story says Abraham set aside seven ewes to witness a covenant or oath. This oath was made regarding a well he had dug. Another account describes Isaac re-digging wells that his father Abraham had used. Isaac also made a peace treaty or covenant with Abimelech at this location. Some scholars suggest the name refers to the seventh well dug in the area.

Human habitation in this region dates back to the fourth millennium BC. During the Chalcolithic period, or Copper Age, people lived in caves nearby. These early inhabitants crafted metal tools and raised cattle. The archaeological site of Tel Be'er Sheva is located a few kilometers east of the modern city. This site contains the ruins of an ancient Iron Age town from around the 10th century BC. This town was one of the first planned settlements in the region. It featured streets laid out in a grid pattern for different uses. The town also had an elaborate water system, including a huge cistern carved from rock.

The city has a long history of being destroyed and rebuilt by different empires. During the Roman and Byzantine periods, the city developed significantly. It became a center of an eparchy, which is a type of administrative district. The inhabitants included Nabataeans and Jews who spoke primarily Greek. They made a living through agriculture, such as viticulture and olive oil production.

During the Byzantine era, at least six churches were built in the city. One of these was the largest church ever excavated in the Negev desert. The city also served as a key point on the Limes Palestinae, a defensive line against desert tribes.

Modern Beersheba was established at the start of the 20th century by the Ottomans.

During World War I, the city was captured by British-led Australian Light Horse troops. The population changed drastically during the First Arab-Israeli War in 1948-49. Before this time, the town had been almost entirely Muslim. The 1947 UN Partition Plan originally designated the city to be part of an Arab state. However, the Egyptian army occupied it from May 1948 until October 1948. The Israel Defense Forces then captured the city.

Today, the metropolitan area has a diverse population of approximately equal Jewish and Arab residents. Many Jewish residents are descendants of Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews. These groups relocated or were expelled from Arab countries after Israel was founded in 1948. There are also communities of Bene Israel and Cochin Jews from India. Since 1990, new waves of immigration have arrived from the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia.
