Specialized edges on the beak help animals handle specific foods. The cutting edges of the mandibles are called the tomia. 

Scientists use specific anatomical landmarks to identify and study birds. The culmen is the dorsal ridge of the upper mandible. It runs from the forehead feathers to the tip of the beak.
