Long ago, a big fight happened.
Long ago, two big groups fought a war.
In 1697, a large war was happening in Europe.
On September 11, the Ottoman army tried to cross the Tisza River. They did not know Eugene was close. Eugene's army surprised them. The Ottomans were stuck in the water. The battle was very hard for the Ottoman troops. Many soldiers fell into the river. The Sultan had to leave his army and run away.
Eugene's army won a big victory. They even took the Sultan's treasure chest. They also found the state seal. This was the first time an enemy took such a thing. The win helped end the long war. A peace treaty was signed in 1699. This changed who ruled much of the land.
The Battle of Zenta was a very important fight in a long war. This conflict was part of the Great Turkish War. It took place on September 11, 1697. The fight happened near Zenta in the Kingdom of Hungary. At that time, the land was under Ottoman rule. The battle was between the Ottoman Empire and the Holy League. The Holy League fought for the Habsburg lands. This battle changed who held power in Central Europe for a long time.
The battle happened because of a surprise attack. The Ottoman army was trying to cross the Tisza River. They were moving their troops and supplies across the water. They did not know the Habsburg army was coming.
Many years of fighting led to this moment. Earlier, the Ottomans had won several battles in the 1690s. Sultan Mustafa II led a large force of 100,000 men from Edirne.
The fight was very intense for both sides. The Habsburg army attacked from the rear in a crescent shape. Many Ottoman soldiers fell into the river during the chaos. The bridge they were using became too crowded and collapsed.
This victory helped bring peace to the region. The battle was a major reason the Great Turkish War ended. In 1699, leaders signed the Treaty of Karlowitz.
The Battle of Zenta was a decisive military engagement during the Great Turkish War. It occurred on September 11, 1697, near the village of Zenta. At that time, this area was part of the Kingdom of Hungary. The land was under the control of the Ottoman Empire. The battle pitted the Ottoman forces against the Holy League. The Holy League fought on behalf of the Habsburg Emperor, Leopold I. This single event changed the balance of power in Central Europe for many years.
The conflict began because the Ottoman Empire wanted to reclaim territory in Hungary. In 1697, Sultan Mustafa II launched a massive invasion. He personally led a force of 100,000 men from Edirne. He reached Belgrade in August and planned to move north. The Ottoman army aimed to cross the Tisza River. This river was a major natural barrier before reaching Transylvania. The Sultan’s army began crossing the river near Zenta in September. They did not realize a large enemy force was approaching them.
Prince Eugene of Savoy led the Habsburg Imperial forces. He was a young French prince of Italian descent. He had already earned a reputation for being a great commander. To prepare for battle, Eugene had to borrow money. He used this money to pay his soldiers and build medical services. His army grew to about 50,000 men through various groups. These included German, Austrian, Hungarian, and Serbian troops. The Serbian Militia, led by Jovan Popović Tekelija, provided 10,000 men.
The battle was won through a successful surprise attack. Captain Tekelija monitored the Ottoman movements and informed Prince Eugene. Eugene decided to ignore orders to act with caution. He led his troops through swamps and bogs to reach the Ottoman rear. The Habsburg army arrived just two hours before sunset. The Ottomans were caught while they were still mid-crossing. The Sultan’s heavy artillery and baggage were on one side of the river. Most of the infantry was on the other side.
The Habsburgs used a crescent-shaped movement to attack. This maneuver allowed them to strike from the rear. General Guido Starhemberg led the left flank to trap the Ottomans near the bridge. General Sigbert Heister commanded the right wing. At the same time, Charles-Thomas de Vaudémont attacked from the front. The fighting was very intense near the Ottoman trenches. As the Ottomans retreated toward the bridge, the structure became overcrowded. The bridge eventually collapsed under the weight. Many Ottoman soldiers fell into the river during the chaos.
The results of the battle were massive for the Holy League. The Habsburgs captured the Ottoman royal treasure chest. This chest contained three million piastres. They also captured the Seal of the Empire. This was the first time an enemy had ever taken this symbol. The victors also took 87 cannons and 9,000 baggage carts. They found 6,000 camels and 15,000 oxen left behind. The Ottoman army suffered heavy losses, including their Grand Vizier. In contrast, the Holy League reported only 429 casualties.
The Battle of Zenta acted as a catalyst for peace. It led directly to the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699. Under this treaty, the Ottoman Empire had to give up much land. The Habsburgs gained control of Hungary, Transylvania, Croatia, and Slavonia. This treaty marked the end of Ottoman dominance in Central Europe. It established Habsburg hegemony, or leadership, in the region. The victory fundamentally changed the map of the continent.
