The Battle of Shiloh was a massive conflict during the American Civil War. It took place on April 6 and 7, 1862, in southwestern Tennessee. This engagement is also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing. The fighting occurred in a region known as the Western Theater. The battlefield was a triangle of land shaped by various creeks and the Tennessee River. Most of the terrain was wooded with peach orchards and cotton fields.
Before the battle, Union forces had gained momentum in the region. Major General Ulysses S. Grant led victories at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in February 1862. These victories were significant because they controlled vital rivers used for transportation. The Union also used steam-powered gunboats to increase their firepower. These timberclads were armored with thick oak wood and carried up to 13 artillery pieces.
The Confederate strategy focused on the town of Corinth, Mississippi. Corinth was a strategic hub because it sat at the intersection of two major railroads. These rails moved supplies and troops between Tennessee and Virginia. By the end of March 1862, over 40,000 Confederate troops were concentrated at Corinth.
The Union forces consisted of two main armies. The Army of the Tennessee was commanded by Ulysses S. Grant. It included 48,894 men divided into six divisions. Some divisions, like the 1st and 3rd, were made of veteran fighters. Others, like William Tecumseh Sherman's 5th Division, had very little combat experience.

Conditions changed overnight when Union reinforcements arrived. A division from the north and portions of Buell's Army of the Ohio joined Grant.
