It took place on October 21, 1600. This fight happened in what is now Gifu Prefecture. It occurred at the end of a long period of fighting called the Sengoku period. The battle was fought between two massive groups of people. One group was the Eastern Army led by Tokugawa Ieyasu. The other group was the Western Army led by Ishida Mitsunari. Mitsunari fought to protect the interests of a young child named Toyotomi Hideyori. This battle is often called the most important fight in Japanese history.

Before the battle, many leaders were arguing about power. After the leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi died, his son Hideyori was only five years old. This left a gap in leadership. Many generals began to disagree with each other. Some generals joined Ieyasu, while others stayed with Mitsunari. Mitsunari tried to use certain castles to stop the Eastern Army from moving. However, the Eastern Army captured Gifu Castle first. This meant the two armies had to meet on an open field instead. This field was at Sekigahara.

On the morning of the battle, the weather was very thick with fog.

The rain from earlier had made the fog very heavy. Because of this, the two armies did not see each other right away. They stumbled into each other by mistake. Some historians say the fight began around 8:00 in the morning. Others believe it actually started closer to 10:00. The fighting was very intense with many arrows and guns. The Tokugawa army even used 19 cannons from a Dutch trading ship.

Their rule lasted all the way until the year 1868. This long period of time followed the chaos of the earlier wars. The Battle of Sekigahara was the spark that brought this new era of peace. It took place on October 21, 1600, in what is now Gifu Prefecture. This battle occurred at the end of the Sengoku period. This was a long era of civil war in Japan. The battle is often called the most important event in Japanese history. It determined who would lead the nation for centuries. The outcome shaped the political structure of Japan until 1868.

The conflict arose because of a power vacuum. After the leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi died, his heir was only five years old. This child was named Toyotomi Hideyori. Without a strong adult leader, different factions began to fight for control. One side was the Eastern Army led by Tokugawa Ieyasu. The other side was the Western Army led by Ishida Mitsunari. Mitsunari claimed to fight on behalf of the young Toyotomi clan. These two groups represented different visions for Japan's future.

Before the main battle, several smaller conflicts changed the strategy.

Mitsunari originally planned to use Gifu Castle and Ōgaki Castle as choke points. These castles would have blocked the Eastern Army's advance. However, the Eastern Army captured Gifu Castle first. Leaders like Fukushima Masanori and Ii Naomasa led this successful movement. Later, Mizuno Katsunari defeated Shimazu Yoshihiro's troops near Sone Castle. These failures forced Mitsunari to change his plan. He decided to meet the Eastern Army on the open field at Sekigahara.

The battle began on a very foggy morning.

Heavy rains had caused a dense fog to settle over the field. Because of the fog, the two armies stumbled into each other by mistake. While some records say the fighting started at 08:00, recent research suggests 10:00. The battle was loud and intense. Soldiers used arrows, spears, and guns called Tanegashima matchlocks. The Tokugawa army even used 19 cannons from a Dutch trading ship.

The fighting created a deadlock between the two massive forces.

The course of the battle changed due to mass defections. Defection happens when a commander switches sides during a fight. The most notable defector was Kobayakawa Hideaki. He was the nephew of Toyotomi Hideyori. Although he was part of the Western Army, he joined the Eastern Army with over 15,000 men. This move overwhelmed the position of Ōtani Yoshitsugu. Other commanders, such as Wakisaka Yasuharu and Ogawa Suketada, also switched to the Tokugawa side. These changes caused the Western Army to collapse quickly.

Internal disagreements also weakened the Western Army's strength.

Mōri Terumoto was the overall commander of the Western coalition. However, his forces stayed at Osaka Castle instead of joining the fight. His vassal, Kikkawa Hiroie, actually worked against the Western cause. Hiroie promised to cooperate with the Eastern Army in exchange for a pardon. He even blocked other Western troops from reaching the battlefield. Because of these actions, the Mōri clan saw their land and power greatly reduced after the war. The Western Army could not stay united under such pressure.

The victory for Tokugawa Ieyasu had massive long-term consequences.

His win marked the beginning of the Tokugawa shogunate. A shogunate is a government led by a military leader called a shogun. The Tokugawa family ruled Japan for approximately 250 years. This period of stability lasted from 1600 until 1868. The battle ended the era of constant warfare known as the Sengoku period. It established a new social and political order that defined Japan for generations. Sekigahara remains a symbol of how a single day can redirect the course of a nation.
