This fight changed things for a long time. Later, Russia took control of the land. This led to more wars between Russia and Iran. These wars lasted for many years.
The Battle of Krtsanisi was a major conflict in 1795. It took place near the city of Tbilisi in the land of Georgia.
The conflict began when Agha Mohammad Khan led a large army toward Georgia. He moved his forces across the Aras river in August 1795. His army was very big, with about 70,000 soldiers in total.
The fighting lasted from September 8 to September 11, 1795. The Georgian soldiers fought very hard near the city of Tbilisi. They even pushed back some of the first attacks from the Persians.
After the battle, the Iranian army entered the capital city of Tbilisi. The city was destroyed and many people were killed.
This battle led to many more changes in the region. Because the Georgian lands were in ruins, Russia eventually took control of them. This caused two more big wars between Russia and Iran in the 1800s. These wars were fought over the same lands in Transcaucasia and Dagestan. Eventually, Iran signed treaties that gave these areas to Russia. The Battle of Krtsanisi was a key moment that shaped how these nations lived together. It showed how alliances and wars can change the map of the world.
The Battle of Krtsanisi was a decisive military conflict in 1795. It took place near Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. The battle was fought between the Qajar dynasty of Iran and the Georgian kingdoms. Specifically, it involved the Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti and the Kingdom of Imereti.
The conflict grew from a disagreement over political loyalty and alliances. For centuries, parts of Eastern Georgia had been under Iranian influence. In 1744, Nader Shah had granted kingship to Teimuraz II and his son, Heraclius II. After Nader Shah died in 1747, Heraclius II eventually united the kingdoms of Kartli and Kakheti. To secure his kingdom, Heraclius II signed the Treaty of Georgievsk in 1783. This treaty placed Georgia under the protection of the Russian Empire. However, Russia did not provide the military support Heraclius II expected when danger arrived.
In the 1790s, Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar rose to power in Iran. He sought to reincorporate Georgia into the Iranian Empire. He viewed Georgia as a province that had unfairly separated from Iran.
The Persian military strategy involved a massive force of approximately 70,000 soldiers. In August 1795, Agha Mohammad Khan moved his army across the Aras river. He divided his forces into three distinct groups to secure different areas. The left wing moved toward Erivan, while the right wing moved toward Dagestan. The Shah himself led the center force toward the fortress of Shusha. After securing various territories, he directed his main force toward the Georgian capital of Tbilisi.
The actual fighting began on September 8, 1795. The Georgian forces were much smaller, totaling about 5,000 troops. This group included 2,000 soldiers from the neighboring Kingdom of Imereti. The Georgians defended heavily fortified positions on the southwestern edge of Tbilisi. They fought with great intensity for two days. On September 9 and 10, the Georgians actually succeeded in pushing back several Persian attacks. However, the Persian army prepared a massive final offensive for the next day.
On September 11, the battle reached its most intense stage. The Persian army used artillery and a fierce cavalry charge to break the Georgian lines. They managed to cross the Kura River and outflank the Georgian defenders.
The aftermath of the battle had long-lasting consequences for the region. Because Georgia was left in ruins, the Russian Empire eventually annexed the territory. This change triggered two major Russo-Persian wars in 1804–1813 and 1826–1828. Fath Ali Shah, the successor to Agha Mohammad Khan, tried to regain control of the area. He fought to restore Iranian authority north of the Aras and Kura rivers. Ultimately, these wars ended with the Treaty of Gulistan and the Treaty of Turkmenchay. These treaties officially ceded Transcaucasia and Dagestan to the Russian Empire.
