For example, the 22 bastions in Amsterdam cost 11 million florins. In 1544, the city of Siena went bankrupt trying to pay for them. Many forts used a large ditch to stop attackers. These structures were developed during the early modern period. They emerged as a direct response to the rise of gunpowder weapons. Specifically, the increasing power of cannons made older medieval fortifications obsolete. Medieval fortresses often relied on high hills and tall, perpendicular masonry walls. While these were effective against arrows and ladders, they were vulnerable to artillery. A cannon could easily shatter stone walls or destroy a ring-shaped enceinte. Bastion forts changed the geometry of defense to survive this new era of warfare.

The mechanism of a bastion fort relies on geometry and materials to provide defense in depth. Instead of tall, thin walls, these forts used lower and much thicker structures. Engineers often used earth and brick for construction. This was a deliberate choice because brick does not shatter upon impact like stone does.

To protect the main walls, engineers built a glacis. A glacis is a large, gently sloping bank of earth located outside the ditch. This slope served two purposes. First, it deflected cannonballs aimed at the lower part of the main wall. Second, it hid the walls from horizontal artillery fire. This forced attackers to use high-angle fire, which was less effective at that time.

One of the most important features is the bastion itself. In medieval designs, rounded turrets created "dead zones." These were areas at the base of the wall where attackers could hide safely because defenders could not shoot around the curve.

Bastion forts replaced these curves with diamond-shaped points. These points eliminated blind spots and allowed for enfilade fire. Enfilade, or flanking fire, occurs when defenders shoot along the face of a wall from a protected side position. The indentations at the base of each bastion point sheltered cannons. These cannons had a clear line of fire down the edge of neighboring points. This created interlocking fields of fire that could strike attackers anywhere in the ditch.

Bastion forts often included several specialized layers and outworks. A primary structure might be surrounded by a wide ditch to prevent infantry from reaching the walls. Outside this ditch, complex outworks like ravelins, tenailles, hornworks, or crownworks could be added. These extra structures protected the main walls from artillery and provided additional defensive positions. Some forts even featured cavaliers, which are raised secondary structures built entirely inside the main fort. These layers meant an attacker had to overcome many different tiers of defense before reaching the center. This system moved defense from a passive model to an active one.

The history of these fortifications is tied to the conflicts on the Italian peninsula. In the mid-fifteenth century, the design appeared in Italy. The development accelerated during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries due to French invasions. The French army used powerful cannons and bombards that easily destroyed traditional medieval walls. Famous figures helped refine these designs. Michelangelo used earthen works for the defense of Florence. Later, architects like Baldassare Peruzzi and Vincenzo Scamozzi refined the style. By the 1530s and 1540s, the design spread throughout Europe. Italian engineers became highly sought after to help build these new systems.

Building these massive structures was an enormous financial undertaking. They were very expensive to construct and often required improvisation. For example, cities might tear down old medieval curtain walls and use the excavated earth to build new, thicker banks. In Amsterdam, the construction of 22 bastions cost 11 million florins. The city of Siena actually went bankrupt in 1544 while trying to pay for its defenses. Despite the cost, the effectiveness was proven in battle. During the defense of Pisa in 1500, an earthen rampart proved much more resistant to cannon fire than the stone walls it replaced. Similarly, at the siege of Padua in 1509, the Venetian city used a broad ditch and low gun ports to successfully repel French forces.

The influence of the bastion fort extended beyond military engineering into urban planning. The star-shaped pattern had a profound effect on the Renaissance ideal city. Architects and thinkers used these geometric shapes in many utopian city schemes.

While designed for war, the intricate geometry became a symbol of the era's architectural ideals. However, the dominance of the bastion fort eventually ended in the nineteenth century. The invention of the explosive shell changed everything. High explosives and powerful mortars created "plunging fire" that could destroy even the most complex geometric defenses. This led to a shift toward more mobile forms of warfare, making the static, intricate star fort a relic of the past.
