It also ate other marine mammals. One frequent meal was a smaller relative called Dorudon. We know this because of bite marks found on Dorudon skulls. We also see Dorudon remains inside the stomachs of Basilosaurus fossils.

This shows exactly how the predator hunted in its environment.

Scientists first described this creature in 1834. A man named Richard Harlan identified the first fossils. These bones were found in the southeastern United States. A hillside of seashells actually slid down due to rain. This revealed the bones in a long, curved line.

Harlan thought the animal was at least 60 feet long. Later, an anatomist named Richard Owen studied the teeth. He found the teeth were complex and varied. This helped prove the animal was a mammal, not a reptile.

There are two main species of Basilosaurus that scientists recognize. The first is B. cetoides, found in the United States. Its fossils were discovered in the Yazoo Clay formation in Louisiana.

The second species is B. isis, which lived near the Mediterranean Sea. Fossils of B. isis are found in North Africa and Jordan. Many skeletons have been found in a place called Wadi El Hitan in Egypt. Some B. cetoides fossils might have weighed over 10 tons.

Basilosaurus was very different from the whales we see today. It had different types of teeth, like canines and molars. This trait is called heterodonty. Because of these teeth, it could probably chew its food. Modern whales usually swallow their food whole without chewing.

Its brain was also smaller than modern whales. It likely did not use echolocation to find its way. Echolocation is the way some whales use sound to "see" underwater. This makes Basilosaurus a unique part of whale history.

Basilosaurus is a genus of massive, predatory, prehistoric archaeocete whales. These animals lived during the late Eocene epoch, roughly 41.3 to 33.9 million years ago. As archaeocetes, they represent an early stage in whale evolution. They were among the largest animals to exist between the K–Pg extinction and the rise of modern giants.

Today, they are recognized as important members of the Pelagiceti, or fully aquatic cetaceans. Understanding Basilosaurus helps scientists trace how land mammals transitioned into the ocean.

Feeding on other marine life required specialized physical traits. Unlike modern whales that swallow prey whole, Basilosaurus possessed heterodonty. This means they had different types of teeth, including canines and molars. This dental variety likely allowed them to chew their food.

They were the top predators in shallow inland seas. Their diet included sharks, large fish, and other marine mammals. Fossil evidence shows they frequently hunted a smaller relative named Dorudon.

We know this because of bite marks on Dorudon skulls and remains found inside Basilosaurus stomachs.

There are two confirmed species within this genus. The first is Basilosaurus cetoides, which is the type species. Its fossils were discovered in the southeastern United States, specifically in the Yazoo Clay formation of Louisiana.

The second species is Basilosaurus isis. This species lived in the region now known as the Mediterranean Sea. Fossils of B. isis are found in Jordan and North Africa. Many well-preserved skeletons have been found at Wadi El Hitan in Egypt.

The history of its discovery is full of early scientific mistakes. In 1834, Richard Harlan first described the fossils. The bones were revealed when rain caused a seashell-filled hillside to slide. Harlan initially thought the animal was a giant reptile. He named it Basilosaurus, which means "king lizard."

Later, the anatomist Richard Owen examined the molar teeth. He noted the teeth were double-rooted. This complex dental morphology is not found in reptiles. Owen correctly concluded the animal was a mammal. He proposed the name Zeuglodon, but rules of nomenclature kept the original name.

Basilosaurus was a truly enormous creature. B. cetoides measured around 60 feet long. Some estimates suggest it weighed more than 10 tons. A 2025 study estimated the weight of a long B. cetoides at 15 tons.

B. isis was also large, measuring around 50 feet long. These animals were significantly larger than many other Eocene cetaceans. Their size helped them dominate the shallow marine environments they inhabited.

Researchers have found many interesting details in the fossil record. In 2015, a complete skeleton was found in Wadi El Hitan. This find included the remains of its prey, such as fish and a Dorudon.

The skeleton also showed signs of scavenging by large sharks like Otodus sokolovi. Scientists also studied the reduced hind limbs of these whales. Some research suggests these limbs may have functioned as copulatory guides. Even the local geology is connected, as a mason company once found whale fossils in a stone table counter.

Comparing Basilosaurus to modern whales reveals significant evolutionary changes. Modern toothed whales have a "melon" in their head to help with echolocation. Basilosaurus lacked this structure and had a smaller brain. This suggests they did not use high-frequency sound to navigate.

However, a 2011 study found their skulls were asymmetrical. This asymmetry is a trait shared with modern toothed whales. This discovery helps scientists understand the complex transition from early whales to the species alive today.
