After the emperor died, Basil became the sole ruler of the empire. He started a new ruling family known as the Macedonian dynasty.

As an emperor, Basil worked very hard to improve how his land was run. He did not have a formal education, but he was a respected leader. One of his biggest jobs was fixing the empire's laws. He started a massive project to collect all the laws into sixty books. These laws were called the Basilika. His successor, Leo VI, finished this huge task. The Basilika stayed as the law for the empire for a very long time.

Basil also led his armies to protect and grow his empire. In 872, his general Christopher defeated a group called the Paulicians.

Basil also worked with the Holy Roman Emperor, Louis II, to fight against the Arabs. This teamwork helped the Byzantines take control of parts of Italy, like the city of Bari. However, he lost control of Sicily in 878. Some say this happened because he sent ships away to move marble for a church instead.

Basil's life ended in a very unexpected way in 886. He was out hunting when his belt got caught in a deer's antlers.

However, Basil soon feared he would lose his power to other courtiers. On September 24, 867, Basil organized the assassination of Michael III. He did this with a small group of companions. After the emperor's death, Basil became the sole ruler, known as the basileus. This transition marked the beginning of his long reign.

As a ruler, Basil focused heavily on legal reform. He is often called the "second Justinian" because of this work. He began a massive project to collect and organize Byzantine laws. This resulted in a collection of sixty books called the Basilika. He also created smaller legal manuals known as the Eisagoge. Although Basil started this work, his son Leo VI finished it. The Basilika remained the law of the empire for centuries.

Basil also managed important military and foreign affairs. In 872, his general Christopher defeated the Paulicians, a group that had rebelled.
