History provides many names for this unpredictable sea. Russians previously called it the Murman Sea or the Pomorsky Sea. The current name honors Willem Barentsz, a Dutch navigator. He led expeditions to the far north during the late sixteenth century. 
Economic interests in the sea have led to complex political negotiations. For decades, Norway and Russia disputed their maritime boundary. Norway preferred a median line based on the 1958 Geneva Convention. Russia favored a sector line based on a 1926 decision. They eventually agreed to a moratorium on exploration in 1976. In 2010, the two nations signed an agreement to settle the boundary. This agreement went into force in July 2011. This opened the "grey zone" for oil and gas exploration.
Significant gas fields have been discovered in the region. The Shtokman field is a giant gas field. It is currently the fifth-largest gas field in the world. Norway also operates the Snøhvit field. However, the remote location makes development very expensive. There are also environmental concerns regarding the sea. It is considered one of the most polluted places on Earth. This is due to industrial pollution and radioactive waste dumping. Rising shipping and military activity increase the risk of future oil spills. 
Climate change is causing a process called "Atlantification." The Barents Sea is considered an Arctic warming hot spot. Global warming is reducing the amount of sea ice. It is also changing the stratification of the water column. This means the layers of water are changing how they mix. These hydrologic changes could cause major weather shifts in Eurasia. One prediction is that increased evaporation will lead to more winter snow in continental Europe.
