They sit north of the island of Maewo. Along with the Torres Islands, they make up the Torba province. Many of these islands were formed by volcanoes. Gaua is the largest island in the group. It has a rugged land shape with a volcano called Mount Gharat. Inside the crater of this volcano is Lake Letas. This is the largest freshwater lake in all of Vanuatu.

Other islands in the group have very different shapes and sizes. Vanua Lava is a high island with an active volcano named Mount Suretamate. The capital city, Sola, is located on Vanua Lava. Ureparapara is the third largest island. It is an old volcanic cone. The sea has broken into it to form Divers Bay on the east coast. To the east, you can find the Rowa Islands. These are very small, low islands on a coral atoll. Mota Lava is the highest island in this eastern chain.

People have lived in these islands for a very long time. Around 3,000 years ago, people called Austronesian navigators settled here. They belonged to the Lapita culture. Archaeologists found ancient pottery on Mota Lava. They also found obsidian, which is a dark volcanic glass, on Motalava, Vanua Lava, and Gaua. In 1606, a Spanish expedition led by Pedro Fernández de Quirós reached the islands. He gave the islands Spanish names. Later, the islands were named after Sir Joseph Banks. This happened after William Bligh explored them.

Life on the islands involves many different activities. Most people practice subsistence agriculture to feed themselves. They also grow crops to sell, like coffee and cacao. On Gaua, they grow cacao. They also produce copra for export. A French company used to work the sulphur at Mount Suretamate. Tourism is also becoming more important now. You can travel to the islands by airplane. Airports are on Mota Lava, Vanua Lava, and Gaua. Ships also visit to carry passengers and goods.

There is a great variety of culture and language here. The people of the Banks Islands speak 15 different languages. All these languages belong to the Oceanic subgroup. Some of these languages are in danger of being lost. This is because only a few people still speak them. For example, the Lemerig language has only two speakers left. The Olrat language has only three speakers.

They form the northernmost part of the Torba province. This island group sits just north of the island of Maewo. Together with the Torres Islands to the northwest, they comprise a significant part of the region. In 2009, the total population of these islands was 8,533 people. The islands are characterized by diverse geological features and a rich cultural history.

Volcanic activity has shaped much of the landscape. Gaua is the largest island in the group. It features a rugged terrain and contains Mount Gharat. This is an active volcano located at the island's center. Inside the volcanic crater of Gaua lies Lake Letas. This is the largest freshwater lake in Vanuatu. Vanua Lava is another major island with high elevation. It is home to the active volcano Mount Suretamate. Sola, the provincial capital, is located on Vanua Lava.

Other islands show different stages of volcanic life. Ureparapara is the third largest island in the group. It is an old volcanic cone. The sea has breached this cone to form Divers Bay on its east coast. Further north, the island of Vet Tagde exists as an extinct volcano. It has not erupted for 3.5 million years. To the east, the Rowa Islands consist of small, low islands on a coral atoll. Mota Lava is the highest island in this eastern chain at 411 meters. A tiny islet named Ra sits off its southern coast, connected by high corals.

Human history in the archipelago began thousands of years ago. Austronesian navigators of the Lapita culture first settled the islands. Archaeologists have discovered evidence of this ancient presence. They found Lapita pottery on Motalava. They also discovered ancient obsidian on Motalava, Vanua Lava, and Gaua. Obsidian is a dark, volcanic glass used by early people. These findings help scientists understand how the first inhabitants lived and moved.

European contact occurred in the early 17th century. A Spanish expedition led by Pedro Fernández de Quirós arrived in April 1606. This was the first time Europeans discovered this part of Vanuatu. The expedition gave many islands Spanish names. They called Gaua Santa María and Vanua Lava Portal de Belén. Later, William Bligh explored the area. The islands were named after his patron, Sir Joseph Banks. Matthew Flinders also charted the islands, and George Augustus Selwyn explored Vanua Lava in 1859.

The economy of the islands relies on several different activities. Most people practice subsistence agriculture to provide for their own needs. They also grow specific crops for export to other places. These include coffee and copra. On the island of Gaua, people also grow cacao. In the past, a French company worked the sulphur deposits at Mount Suretamate. Today, tourism is becoming a more important part of the economy. Travelers can reach the islands by airplane via airports on Mota Lava, Vanua Lava, and Gaua.

Cultural identity is expressed through a wide variety of languages. The inhabitants of the Banks Islands speak 15 different languages. All these languages belong to the Oceanic subgroup of the Austronesian family. However, many of these languages are currently endangered. This means they are at risk of disappearing. Some languages have only a few remaining speakers. For example, the Lemerig language has only two speakers left. The Olrat language has only three speakers.
