The city also faced significant destruction during World War II. Following the war, the city underwent further changes. In 1969, two powerful earthquakes struck the region. The first occurred on 26 October with a magnitude of 6.0. The second hit on 27 October with a magnitude of 6.4. These events caused significant damage and many people lost their homes.
Today, Banja Luka is a bustling administrative and educational center. The city proper has a population of 138,963 people. The total administrative area includes 185,042 inhabitants.
