It is known as the "Steel city of South India." This is because the area has many large steel plants. One of these, JSW Vijayanagar, is one of the largest in all of Asia. The city is also a home for the Karnataka Gramina Bank. This bank has more than 1,100 branches across the state.

The land around Ballari has a very specific look. The city sits on a wide and level plain. This plain is made of dark black cotton soil. Huge hills made of granite rock rise from the ground. The city spreads out around two main hills named Ballari Hill and Kumbara Gudda.

History has changed the name and the borders of this place. Long ago, Ballari was part of a region called Rayalaseema. It was also part of the Madras Presidency. In 2004, the city council was upgraded to a city corporation. The name of the city even changed recently. For a long time, people called it Bellary. In October 2014, the government approved a new name. On 1 November 2014, it officially became Ballari.

Many different people live and work in Ballari. The weather is often hot and semi-arid. This happens because of the Western Ghats mountains. Even so, the monsoons bring light rain throughout the year. Many people speak Kannada, which is the largest language. Others speak Telugu or Urdu.

The climate in this region is classified as hot semi-arid (BSh). This weather pattern is primarily caused by the rain shadow effect of the Western Ghats. Despite the dry nature of the climate, monsoons still influence the local weather. The city experiences light rain throughout the year. There is a slight increase in rainfall during the summer and autumn seasons.

History has brought many changes to the political status and name of the city. Ballari was once part of the Rayalaseema region, known as the Ceded Districts. It was part of the Madras Presidency until 1 November 1956. In 2004, the Ballari city municipal council was upgraded to a city corporation. The city also underwent a formal name change in recent years. For a long time, the city was known as Bellary. In October 2014, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs approved a proposal to rename it. On 1 November 2014, the name officially became Ballari.

The population of Ballari is diverse in both numbers and language. According to the 2011 Census of India, the urban population was 410,445. Of this total, 206,149 were male and 204,296 were female. The census also recorded that 280,610 people were literate. Kannada is the most common language, spoken by 42.06% of the population. Telugu is the second most spoken language at 25.03%. Urdu is also significant, spoken by 24.35% of the residents. Other languages include Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Marwari, and Lambadi.

Ballari has a robust economy built on textiles and heavy industry. Historically, cotton was a major agricultural crop in the surrounding areas. This led to a thriving industry for ginning, spinning, and weaving. The first steam cotton-spinning mill was established in 1894. By 1901, this mill had 17,800 spindles and employed 520 workers. The city also has a deep history in garment manufacture. During the First World War, the Marathi-speaking "Darji" community migrated to the area. They used their tailoring skills to stitch uniforms for the British Indian Army.

Today, the city is famous for denim garments. There are approximately 260 denim garment units operating in Ballari. These units employ nearly 3,000 families.

Transportation and infrastructure connect Ballari to the rest of the country. The city is served by several major roads, including National Highway 67 and National Highway 150A. State Highways 128 and 132 also pass through the city.

For rail travel, the Ballari Junction railway station is located on the Guntakal–Vasco da Gama section. The nearest functional commercial airport is the Jindal Vijaynagar Airport. This combination of road, rail, and air access supports the city's industrial and commercial growth.
