During World War II, the site became the location of terrible crimes. Nazi Germany occupied the city of Kyiv in September 1941. German leaders decided to murder the Jewish people living there. They claimed this was a response to explosions in the city. On September 29 and 30, 1941, they killed 33,771 Jewish people.

Many different groups worked together to carry out these orders. High-ranking leaders like Kurt Eberhard and Friedrich Jeckeln made the decisions. They gave orders to units like Sonderkommando 4a. This unit was part of a larger group called Einsatzgruppe C. Other groups, like the 45th Battalion of the German Order Police, also helped. Even the German Sixth Army worked with these units. They planned and carried out the mass murders together. This shows how many people were involved in the occupation.
Some people managed to survive these very hard times. One famous survivor was an actress named Dina Pronicheva.
After the war ended, the world worked to find justice. Leaders like Paul Blobel were caught and put on trial.

During the German occupation of Kyiv in 1941, Babi Yar became the site of massive atrocities. Nazi forces occupied the city on 19 September 1941. Shortly after, explosives planted by the Soviet secret police, known as the NKVD, caused damage in the city. On 26 September, German leaders met at the Rear Headquarters of Army Group South. Generalmajor Kurt Eberhard, the military governor, and SS-Obergruppenführer Friedrich Jeckeln decided to exterminate the Jews of Kyiv. They claimed this was retaliation for the explosions in the city. This decision was also supported by SS-Obergruppenführer Otto Rasch, the commander of Einsatzgruppe C.
The execution of these orders involved several organized military and police units. The primary unit responsible was Sonderkommando 4a, a sub-unit of Einsatzgruppe C commanded by Paul Blobel. This unit worked alongside the SD and SiPo, which are specialized security and police forces. They were reinforced by the 45th Battalion of the German Order Police and the 303rd Battalion. The 303rd Battalion was responsible for guarding the outer perimeter of the site. Additionally, the Ukrainian Auxiliary Police and local collaborators assisted in the operations. Even the German Sixth Army, under Field Marshal Walter von Reichenau, worked with these units to execute the plan.
The first major massacre took place on 29 and 30 September 1941. On 28 September, an order was posted telling the Jews of Kyiv to assemble for supposed resettlement. Instead, they were driven to the ravine in groups of ten. Victims were forced to undress and were beaten if they resisted. Once in the ravine, they were shot with machine guns. During these two days, approximately 33,771 Jewish civilians were murdered. This event was the largest single massacre in the history of the Holocaust up to that date. It was only later surpassed by the Odessa massacre and Aktion Erntefest in Poland.
Massacres at Babi Yar continued throughout the German occupation. Other victims included Soviet prisoners of war, communists, and Romani people. Many Ukrainians were also murdered, including the poet Olena Teliha and her husband. Patients from the Ivan Pavlov Psychiatric Hospital were also killed there. It is estimated that between 100,000 and 150,000 people were murdered at the site in total.

Very few people survived these massacres, but their stories helped the world learn the truth. One notable survivor was Dina Pronicheva, an actress at the Kyiv Puppet Theatre.
As the war ended, the Nazi regime attempted to hide their crimes through a project called Sonderaktion 1005. Supervised by Paul Blobel, this operation aimed to eliminate all physical evidence of the mass murders. Prisoners from the Syrets concentration camp were forced to exhume the bodies. The bodies were then burned on large pyres made from stolen gravestones. After the war, many leaders were held accountable during legal trials. Paul Blobel was sentenced to death at the Einsatzgruppen Trial and was hanged in 1951.
